Today I will attempt to review the debut album of a band to which I recently was introduced, Desolate Sky.

Understand, when a disc is given to me by a friend that would like an honest opinion of how it sounds, I will always be honest, sometimes a bit brutally. My expectations are also not often very high. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of undiscovered bands with incredible skill and talent, but it does not often turn into the only thing I listen to for a month straight like when Tool or System of a Down come out with a new album. Well, this week that has changed.
'Between the Devil and the Darkness' has been "stuck" in my car stereo since I received it. I will say if you are a fan of Megadeth, Maiden, Anthrax or the like you will find yourself at home here. However I cannot simply lump them into that era. There are some genuinely good licks there, and it does not sound dated. Don't expect to hear 'Peace Sells', because you will not find it here. I dislike describing bands by comparing to others, and that is good in this case because Desolate Sky, while definitely having a "classic" metal sound, have carved out a unique sound of their own.
I think many of the tracks would feel right at home on today's radio without seeming out of place. If you are looking for cookie monster vocals however, look elsewhere. The guitar, bass, drums and vocals are all outstanding, and the songs are well written and thoughtful. The songs that have really stuck with me are 'No More Lies', 'Expendable', and the title track, but every track is solid. I'm sure they will all take turns as my favorites at some point.
I was almost tempted to fill this review with cliché's about how this band is "bringing back the metal" but I don't think that would give the album the respect it truly deserves. I think 'Between the Devil and the Darkness' is a solid 5 star album. It truly has everything you could ask for and then some. If you've been craving some good, heavy yet melodic metal than look no further. You have found it.
