Whoo Boy! What goings on behind-the-scenes this week!
This article is owned by http://www.mediafiends.com/ & may not be reproduced without permission. TUESDAY: Controversy over the official "Rockstar" website deleting all references to the newspaper article that got Phil Ritchie booted. Word that Jason Newsted probably is not welcome back in Metallica because James Hetfield dislikes him. Lots of talk during tonight's show, which was edited out, of Brooke Burke's exercise video and what Dave and Tommy think about it. The New Post reporting how Tommy Lee recently attended the opening of a New York club, with the club supplying two named women in his hotel room, one swathed in liquor, the other in cupcakes. And then there was a show. As much as Zayra Alvarez does not belong as the lead singer of "Supernova", she makes great TV, and although there was much of the bizarre in her performance, it was not nearly as bad as I had hoped. I think Jill is the one who seriously dialed the wrong number, screaming into the phone tonight. Rocker 1: Patrice Pike – Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder) – with Tommy Lee on drums: First of all, at the beginning of the show on July 5th, she looked like an unkempt punk rocker. She still has much of the punk look, but between her hair and probably a better makeup job, I thought Patrice looked great tonight. There's no shame in a rocker chick looking pretty. As far as the performance, I think Patrice may be nipping at the heels of Dilana and Storm. I think she was terrific tonight, and did well not to be overshadowed and drowned out by Tommy Lee on the drums. Patrice may well be finding her groove, and could be a sleeper pick to win this gig if she keeps this up. Rocker 2: Josh Logan – Santeria (Sublime) I'm not sure what Supernova will do if Josh lands in the Bottom Three, but his vocals on this interesting rock song were great. There's a band somewhere that Josh can front, even if its not Supernova. And to my ears, Josh and Dana would clean up if they went on "Idol." Rocker 3: Dilana Robichaux – Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love (Bad Company) I think the guy that carried her around was her boyfriend who flew in from Houston. For me, most of this performance was not up to the standard Dilana has set for herself. Maybe because the verses are kind of monotone, maybe because Paul Rodgers of Bad Company sang this song so well, but Dilana's go at the verses were just good, not great. The higher notes, however, I loved. Dilana showed good range on those. Storm and Patrice are now strong competition for her. Rocker 4: Toby Rand – Pennyroyal Tea (Nirvana) I don't understand why he's in the early Bottom Three -- was it his antics in the audience? Or did the public want him to be on warm milk and laxatives, and cherry-flavored antacids? I think this was his best singing in three weeks. Rocker 5: Zayra Alvarez – 867-5309/Jenny (Tommy Tutone) Now I know who Zayra reminds me of -- Lynda Carter. That performance seemed like it was Lynda Carter, as "Wonder Woman", attempting to sing a punk rock arrangement of Tommy Tutone. Or maybe Zayra was auditioning for the Gina Gershon role in the off-Broadway production of "Showgirls." That being said, the vocals were not that bad, certainly not as bad as I expected and hoped for, and Zayra brings personality and uniqueness to the show. There's no way she's winning this gig, but I think she might survive to next week. And she is serious eye candy. Rocker 6: Magni – Clocks (Coldplay) Chris Martin needs to hear how the House Band arranged that song, and do it that way in concert. As for Magni, awwww his son is so cuuute! And Magni won the prize of the week, which is pretty darned good. As was his singing. I rate Magni as the top male. Rocker 7: Jill Gioia – Don’t You (Forget About Me) (Simple Minds) Hell, she really wanted to remind us not to "FORGET ABOUT ME"! I think she also wanted dogs and cats around the world not to forget about her. If she had just kept more to the original, she wouldn't be in danger of getting booted. Maybe Jill still has a bit of overconfidence since "Bring Me To Life." I think she dialed the wrong number -- this is National TV, not some bar on Longeyeland. Rocker 8: Ryan Star– Losing My Religion (R.E.M.) While I thought he screamed the song a little too much, and looked like he was trying to become the heir apparent to Billy Joel, I can see how the band liked him. Rocker 9: Lukas Rossi – Celebrity Skin (Hole) Here was my pre-show thought: Maybe I'm wrong about this, but I think he's going to do the blood-curdling schtick again, and I'm going to hate it again. That's exactly what happened. In fact, the blood-curdling yelping was worse than ever. Sing a damned acoustic song! Rocker 10: Storm Large – Changes (David Bowie) Note to Simon Fuller: See what happens when a great singer sings a great song, even if its not "pop", and without arbitrary age limits? I listened to this song a second time with my eyes closed. Storm: incredibly talented, incredibly beautiful. She outclassed just about everyone tonight. It could be that this thing will come down to three women, as opposed to three men last year: Patrice, Storm, and Dilana, and Storm might just win this thing. Rocker 11: Dana Andrews– Baba O’Riley (The Who) Here was my pre-show comment: If Dana pulls this off, she's a bona fide contender for this gig. Now I know why she didn't go on American Idol -- because its "such a teenage wasteland." Can a woman sing like Roger Daltrey? We'll See. I purposely listened to Jordis Unga's version of this song from last year, and Jordis's was better. Dana has a fantastic voice, but she is laboring to be a rocker, and its only there in part. Not as good as it could have been, but it is awfully difficult to match Roger Daltrey. Besides, this song should be listened to with all the instrumental parts. Its a little disjointed when its cut for a Reality show. WEDNESDAY: Dana wasn't going to win this gig anyway, and just as her version of "Baba O'Riley" was too pop and lounge-like (unlike her great recent performances), her take on "House Of The Rising Sun" was the same. Tattoo or not, Dana had to work at being a rock and roller. Interesting tidbit is that it was around 40 years ago (Yikes!) that the original "House Of The Rising Sun" was also performed on CBS on the great old Ed Sullivan Show by Eric Burden and The Animals. Although I'm pretty sure Bob Dylan wrote it and recorded it first. My advice for Dana: American Idol auditions are in L.A. in a few days, I think. TRY OUT! I'd LOVE to see Dana on Idol (as well as Josh and Jill, although I'm not sure if Jill is over the age limit). Until Jill sang Heart's "Alone", I thought she was a goner. It wasn't an absolutely perfect performance, but where it was good, it gave me chills. If she could just stop screwing up artistically, she could go far. Or maybe, she's like last year's contestant Jessica Robinson, who saved herself numerous times by singing the living daylights out of INXS songs. As far as I'm concerned, Jill wiped the floor clean with Carrie Underwood, who sang "Alone" on American Idol 4. Is it because Patrice went first? Or because she's so punk? Or is she getting lost in the shuffle? She did NOT deserve to be in the Bottom Three. Lukas Rossi did, but maybe Canada is voting for him in droves. I haven't voted yet this season, but I think I'm going to start voting for Patrice. That being said, I don't think her version of Jeff Buckley's "Eternal Life" was that great, but it was good enough. I have to admit that I missed a lot of the 90's music scene while it happened, so I'm not really all that familiar with the work of the late and great Jeff Buckley. And as Gilby Clarke hinted, if Patrice continues to land in the Bottom Three, she won't last long -- even though on Tuesday, I predicted that she could be one of the top three women. INXS took the number of times a contestant landed in the Bottom Three into account -- after all, if this audience, which is likely to be the core audience for Supernova's album and concert tour, doesn't like Patrice, how well will the band do if she wins? Mark Burnett and Tommy Lee know how to count money. As for Zayra, even though the website votefortheworst.com is not really concentrating on "Rockstar: Supernova" (its focus is on Canadian Idol 4), I have a hunch that some of the VFTW people are voting for Zayra.
