Tonight was classic standards. & a big bore. Tony Bennett was their coach. I can't ever see or hear about him w/o thinking of that SNL skit. While watching this episode of AI my husband kept imitating what Alec's character would say in his critiques. Good times. Paula had to have been high when she said yes to this outfit. She had on a black & white coat & a red & white kerchief around her neck. Ryan said that they have added a 2nd venue to their pat on the back charity thing & Kelly Clarkson will perform at it.
Blake was up first with ‘Mack The Knife'. It started horrible & didn't get much better. His pitch was too high for me & he just took any oomph out of that song. Randy said it was a very good way to start & said it is a perfect song. He had pitch problems but he liked it. Paula said he personified pizzazz. Simon said it was a good choice of song but would only give him a 7 out of 10 & thinks the band helped him.
Phil did ‘Night & Day. I didn't hate it but didn't like it either. It was just there. Randy said it was an interesting choice but he didn't feel any connection or passion. Paula said he is reminiscent of a young Frank Sinatra. She just needs him to have more joy. Simon laughed & asked which Sinatra. He said you could hear that in a funeral parlor cuz it was gloomy & slightly dark. Phil said he was trying to focus on his wife while he sang.
Melinda did ‘Who Could Ask For Anything More'. Of course she knocked it out of the park. This was totally in her wheelhouse. I thought her hair looked great too & I am not trying to be patronizing like Paula. I liked her singing & her hair. Randy said she could give everyone a lesson in singing. Paula said she is masterclass & it was a flawless performance. Simon didn't like the 1st ½ & thought it was cabaret but the 2nd ½ was great. He said he doesn't think they will ever be able to criticize her.
Chris did ‘Don't Get Around Much Anymore'. I am not a fan of him or his nasally voice but thought he did good w/ this song. Randy said it was one of his best. Paula said he didn't compromise & it was his best. Simon said it was very good & believable. He made it hip & worked it out. He thought it was one of the strongest of the night.
Jordin did ‘On a Clear Day'. I thought her vocals were good but the song was awful. Or maybe it was just the band. It was just yuck. Randy said it was da bomb & she's a pro. Paula said she is a magnet of joy & exudes it on stage. Simon said she sang it very well but didn't make it young & current like Chris.
Gina did ‘Smile'. She started sitting on a stool. I don't know what to think of this one. It was like a clusterfuck. It sounded like she & the band were doing 2 different songs. Vocally she wasn't horrible but it was just awful all around that it is hard to figure out just what was at fault. Randy said it was very nice & controlled. Paula said it was flawless. Simon said he can't rave about the vocals & said she was outsung by 2 other girls tonight. Gina mouthed off & said that is why it is a competition & there are different types of vocals. Oh no you di'int.
Sanjaya did ‘Cheek to Cheek'. Just like the judges, what am I supposed to say here? The kid flat out sucks. He tried dancing w/ Paula a little bit. Randy said they can't comment on the vocals anymore so said he is an entertainer. Paula said he is charming but his vocals were off. Simon said he will try a different tactic & said it was incredible.
Haley did ‘Ain't Misbehavin'. She started sitting on a step. I hated this performance. Another pageant performance from her. I didn't like anything about it. Her tiny dress showing lots of cleavage was gross too. Totally looked like something a tacky chick would wear in Vegas. Randy said it fits in her wheelhouse. Paula said green is a good color for her. Simon said she has great legs but it was pageanty.
Lakisha closed the night with ‘Stormy Weather'. It was good but I am over the whole diva thing. Randy said it was da bomb. I didn't catch what Paula said. Simon said it was sassy & a great performance.
I think Melinda owned this night. Blake, Sanjaya & Haley sucked. Phil & Gina were just ok. If people want to keep Sanjaya on to mess w/ the show then for sure Haley should go. She is clearly the 2nd worst. At this point though the only one I would remotely care about getting the axe is Jordin.
