American Idol: American Idol 5; Idolhead & Idolista recap the best season ever.

Somebody got the wise idea that it would be a good idea for me and Idolista to do collective season review. So after months and months of planning and careful dissection of every note of every song here’s what we came up with.
This article is owned by <a href=”http://www.mediafiends.com/”>MediaFiends.com & may not be reproduced without permission.

    Idolhead:
I know I say it every year but for me this was my favorite season ever. I also got to (metaphorically) meet my favorite Idol ever. I got to see a Rocker I really liked. I got tickled by the Pickle. I also got to see another Claylike transformation. I also saw a top 12 that really was deserving of the top 12. This top 12 deserves to tour, not just 10. I caught McPheever and got to ride the E-Train. I discovered a group called the Soul Patrol but in reality were speed dialers in disguise. So jump on the bus with the Idolhead and let’s take a trip down memory lane. OK, OK, I know it just happened so it won’t be a very long trip but it will be a great one.

Now for my perspective on the greatest season ever. I loved every contestant in the top 12 this year. And here’s my look back at each one.

Melissa McGhee wasn’t with us very long but long enough to wish she had stayed longer. What did I just say? She was the only one to make the top 12 that got zero face time. And had it not been for her mangling of “Premonition” she just may have made the top 10. But if she hadn’t been in the bottom 3 who would have taken her place? I felt so sorry for her the night of the top 12 when she had her problem.

Kevin Covais is certainly different than what we were used to seeing on Idol but so was someone else I’ll get to later. Dubbed Chicken Little by Paris, it stuck with him and became an endearing moniker. He came on the show as the dorky little white boy but left the show as well, what else but……………a dorky little white boy.

Lisa Tucker was one of my early favorites to possibly win. Absolutely beautiful with the voice to match. I’m sure we have not seen the last of her. Her video going back to the young actor’s playhouse she was in when she was little was touching to say the least. Her performance of “Alfie” may well have been “The” highlight of finale night. Lisa Tucker = money in the bank.

Bucky Covington was this year’s “Aw Shucks” guy. His gravelly voice and genuine nice guy persona, made him very likeable and I felt he was genuinely grateful for every second he was on the show. I was surprised he made it to the top 12 over Gedeon but the Buck didn’t stop there. He went on to the paycheck top 10. At 28 this could well have been his last chance.

Ace Young was my favorite guy after the top 12 guys took the stage. My favorite guy as in a singing American Idol guy kind of way. I know you foller me. I always liked Ace and he seemed genuinely sincere about his craft and he along with Elliott are my favorites on the Idol CD. And as it so often happens he sang his second best of the series and got the boot for it. I’ll be looking out for his CD. And in case you’re wondering, I’ll be buying it too.

Kellie (Pick Me) Pickler was one of my favorites form the top 24 on. And it had more to do with what she did after she sang. She is one of the most colorful characters of Season 5 or any season. Many think she’s just putting on an act but I think she is genuinely the sweetheart and naïve little girl of 19 she portrays. Her Puck and Pickler skits on the finale were priceless and will surely land her some show on Fox. I’ll be watching. Love her.

Paris Bennett looked for all the world like the winner of this show from her first audition. A testament to the stacked deck this season. Her performaces of “Fever” and “These Foolish Things” were two of the best of this great season. I wish she had done one of these on the AI CD instead of “Midnight Train…” At 17 she showed more composure and big voice for her diminutive size than virtually every one from last season. And no, the rumors that Paris and Bobby Bennett are brother and sister are not true.

Chris Daughtry is inarguably the best rocker ever on Idol. And his bus won’t stop here. Although I don’t care for Rock that much, Chris made me pay attention to him. Behind the usual loud voice of the Rocker, he displayed a great singing voice. His “Wonderful World” and “Have You ever loved a Woman” were two of my favorite performances of the season but his “Hemorrhage”, “Wanted Dead or Alive”, and “I Walk the Line” were masterful works of Rock that made me stand up and listen. His back story made him even more likeable. We’ll be seeing Chris around and sooner rather than later. And I’m looking forward to it.

Elliott Yamin was this year’s nameless and faceless contestant coming into the top 24 but that only lasted one song. He of little stature and big of voice came to not just play but win. His “Moody’s mood….” was the only performances from any contestant to garner a standing O from the dawg this year. I’m glad it is on the CD. Watching his physical transformation was as intriguing as hearing him sing week to week. Elliott came out of nowhere to scoop up fans in droves and put them on the E train and I was one of them. But I did get thrown off the E- Train because I had the McPheever and they didn’t want it to spread. I looked forward to hearing him every week. Lucky for all of us we’ll soon be hearing from him again.

Katharine McPhee, for the Idolhead, is my favorite contestant from all 5 seasons and I get constant grief for it. But I caught McPheever early on and didn’t want to get rid of it. Her performance of “Over the Rainbow” in the top 3 was for me, the best Idol performance of all time. This will be, from what I’ve been told, be the B-side of her single. That should help push sales. The perfect combination of my favorite song of all time (and voted on as the best song of all time as well) sung by my favorite Idol of all time. For me, Kat’s “Since I Fell”, “Till You Come Back to Me”, “Come Rain or Shine”, “Someone to Watch over Me”, “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” and “Over the Rainbow” constituted the greatest number of great performances in a season by any single Idol performer in Idol history. This is just the Idolhead’s idiot opinion. She also garnered the most positive comments collectively from all the judges of any contestant this season as well. This is not the Idolhead’s idiot opinion, and that does mean something. She also crashed Simon’s predicted top 3 party.

I have no doubt Kat will be with us for a very long time. She will not fade away into the sunset like past runners up (save Clay). She is in a movie that should be coming out this summer called “Crazy” so we will get to see how well she can act. Along with her amazing voice she is also stunningly beautiful. Not as much as Elliott’s transformation, but Kat under went one as well. From frumpy in the audtions to fabulous now.

It will be interesting to see whose CD does the best between Taylor and Kat. I will pay to see her in concert, in a movie, on TV or on Broadway because I’m sure she will be seen in all four venues.

Taylor Hicks went from anomaly to …….well a winner. I always liked Taylor but never thought he would have what it took to be an American Idol. Here is one of my miss the mark entirely quotes from my article back in the top 24. “As for Taylor fans, I just don’t think the rest of America will get into his style as much as you may hope”. Duh! He was the only contestant to never see the bottom 3. I guess in reality if a contestant does not get into the bottom 3 they will win whether they win the show or not. That says tons about them. While Taylor never really bit the big one this season for me he never really hit one out of the park either. His “Levon” in Week 2 of the top 24, “Living for the City”, “You Send Me”, “Taking it to the Streets” and “You are so Beautiful” were his best of the season. All really good, but not great. Taylor won this season not on voice, but on charisma, shear performance, and uniqueness. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

I will buy Taylor’s Single just to hear what he sounds like in studio. I don’t count the Idol CD I have already heard him on. I want to hear him on and original tune.

One of my favorite moments of the season was week one of the top 24 when Taylor had Ryan jumping up and down giving out Taylor’s numbers to vote. The uniqueness of Taylor will always be remembered, and in a good way, at least by me.

And for what ever reason this season seemed top go by quicker that any before. Luckily for me Monday starts a new Canadian Idol. So I will have my fix for a few more months anyway. So wat chu say Idolista?

    Idolista:
As you know, Ed, this was my rookie year as a journalistic analyst, being ‘brought up to The Show’ mid-season. The nice thing about that is I have no predictions to live up to (or live down lol), but the handicap for me in doing this article is that I have no notes on the first part of the season….just a few impressions and memories. But I’ll give it my all, Coach.

I agree with you completely that this was the best season ever. There was depth of talent, remarkable diversity in styles, and once the Brittenum twins got the heave-ho, no emphasis on criminal backgrounds or youthful mistakes. In such a season, there was precious little room for any sort of singing errors, whether it be song choice (Patrick Hall & Stevie Scott), or forgotten words (Melissa McGhee), or the inability to back up your hefty attitude with hefty talent (Brenna Gethers). In the early rounds, America picked up on these errors. The ‘personality cult’ factor didn’t really come in to play until the voters got to know the kids as individuals. Sure Idol pimps a few contestants early on, with extra coverage, exposure of their backstories and ‘face time’, but America isn’t so naïve to that as we were a couple seasons back. There was considerable ‘buzz’ about hearing the contestants that were dark horses this year. Even the least talented of the top 12 were worth listening to. No one struck me as cringe-worthy this year, which was not the case in prior years. I think the Idol folks will have a hard act to follow next season. Hopefully, after 5 years experience, they are starting to get it right and 2007 will have the same desirability as 2006 has had.

Another impression I’m left with at season end is that I really liked these young people. There wasn’t a one of them I wouldn’t have been proud to call son or daughter. I liked the way that they all seemed genuinely concerned with one another, too. Sure this is a contest and there is only one winner, but I saw none of the backbiting and undercutting and bitterness that has become a characteristic of reality tv. Perhaps it’s editing, I don’t know, but whatever the cause, the effect allows the show to take the ethical high road, and I find it much more appealing as a result. Now if we could just get the judges to grow up and demonstrate the same good manners as the contestants…..(ok, I’m not holding my breath on that one).

I predict that a record number of this year’s contestants will have some type of career in the entertainment field. They’ve all got the chops, I think. Perhaps they won’t be singers, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the entertainment field. I see Taylor being a very popular touring artist, perhaps eventually a tv personality. I see Kat as a potential Barbra Streisand type triple-threat – Broadway, recording artist, screen actress. If Elliott doesn’t wind up a jazz recording artist, I’ll have to be gnawing on my favorite hat again. I see Fox capitalizing on the popularity of My Name Is Earl and giving Kellie a country girl sitcom. Wouldn’t she have made an outstanding Ellie Mae Clampett back in the day? The girl has natural comedic timing and according to my son who works in the media in South Carolina, she’s a huge hit there for her humor as well as her other talents. With Paris’s family connections, there is no doubt she’ll have a singing career in a few years, if she eschews medical school and decides to pursue it. I grew up on Lynyrd Skynrd, .38 Special, the Marshall Tucker Band, etc. and love the southern rock genre. I predict Bucky will be fronting a southern rock band and touring once Idol is over. E-mail me when your band comes to Denver, Bucky. I’ll definitely want tickets! I will continue to holla at anyone who will listen that Chris should take that front man job with Fuel. The band has been floundering recently without a permanent singer, and IMHO as a fan who owns everything they’ve recorded and has listened to and evaluated Chris all season, I really think he’s a perfect fit. Mandisa will record a gospel CD, or at the very least front a performance choir. We will surely be hearing from Lisa as soon as she works with a performance coach who can help her learn to connect better with the audience. She has a pure and lovely instrument and the world needs to hear it. I see her as a perfect candidate for the ingénue’s voice on the next Disney animated musical feature. Even Kevin Covais could find a career in entertainment. He has a definite sense of humor, seems to enjoy being in the spotlight, and I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict he’ll follow in Ryan Seacrest’s footsteps.

In an open message to Idol’s producers, I would like to implore you to give the kids a professional to work with every week. Their performances, on balance, tend to be much better when they have help. It’s the only equitable way to even up the gap between those contestants with performance experience and savvy and those with none. Leveling the playing field here would be a big boon to both contestants and fans. Why not present the hopefuls at their very best?

My favorite moment of the whole season: watching Elliott shouting out Soul Patrol with unfeigned delight during Taylor’s final performance show appearance, coupled with the ‘guy hug’ he gave him at the conclusion of the guy’s medley number on results night. Anyone trying to teach their children how to lose graciously should take note.

My least favorite moment of the season: Simon’s incredibly tasteless comment about needing a larger stage for Mandisa during the audition rounds. That was utterly unprofessional and dreadfully immature. Much has been made of the fact that Simon, although wealthy now, came from nothing. His lack of manners betrays those humble beginnings, I think. I was so happy that we were able to see her gracious riposte when she was chosen for the group of 24. Again, parents out there, take note.

And finally, even though America may not have agreed unanimously that this season was the best ever, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There is nothing like a little controversy to keep interest up. And interest is certainly up. Here’s to another season in 2007 that we will be agreeing, or disagreeing, is the best ever, and to many, many more to come.

    Idolhead:
Sitting down and watching the Finale and Entertainment Tonight last Friday, it really hit me how good these guys are and how important the show has become (in the TV world). I just don’t see how AI will be able to top this group. I feel they may, just may, be able to equal it, but not surpass it. I have seen every season; have gotten to know every Idol, but none can measure up to AI5 in likable factor or talent I don’t think. But one never knows. There were so many great moments and funny ones too. It makes me glad I can sit back starting tomorrow and watch the Canadians make fools and heroes of themselves in their 4th season, whilst I eagerly await the return of the biggest show on TV.

    Is it January 2007 yet?
