The highlight of the finale for many of us, and the part of the tape we’ve replayed a zillion times, is the return of Clay Aiken. He’s finally back, and it’s about time!! By LindaK

This was a great show. Star studded, fast paced, and something for everyone. For us Clay fanatics, seeing our guy again brought the long buried idol-inspired feelings up to the surface, and boy did it feel good! I had almost forgotten how much I missed him. I had almost forgotten just how well he really sings. I had almost forgotten how it felt to get moved by a performance and have it leave you wanting more. And more, and more, and more!
Clay was my first Idol love. As we all know, no one can ever replace your first, and this person always holds a special place in your heart. However, like many of you on Wednesday night, I honestly didn’t recognize Clay when he appeared on stage. When I asked “Who’s that?”, my daughter had to tell me, ‘Mom, you’ve been obsessed with this guy for years and you don’t even recognize him’? But then he opened his mouth to sing, and all doubt, all questions, all negativity was gone. I sat there mesmerized, smiling the entire time, and loving every second. Clay was singing!! My world was complete, at least for those few minutes.
Clay hasn’t had an easy couple of months. Yet, no matter what else is going on, the effect Clay has on us is unparalleled. Just being on Idol for a few minutes (I could actually time it if you really need to know how long it was) has got the media buzzing and the tongues wagging. It is just incredible the attention that this guy attracts. The way they brought him back has been a topic of conversation since the show aired. Clay sang to an openly gay male (if the posted MySpace profile for Michael is legitimate). The song was originally by Elton John. The lyrics of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” have been dissected and analyzed to death. People are reviewing every facial expression and mannerism and movement that Clay made. Personally, I don’t give a hoot about Clay’s sexuality. As long as he sings, and I get to hear that voice and see those eyes and watch him smile, I will continue to melt and I could care less what he does in his private life. No one in 5 seasons of the show has come close to equaling or surpassing him in terms of vocal ability. Yes, that is only my opinion, but hearing him again reinforced it for me and I’m sticking to my assessment.
Michael, you are one lucky dude. I don’t know if your reaction to seeing your Idol was genuine or scripted, but either way, it made the show. I think I would have jumped up and down like you did, or screamed, or else just fainted. This is something you will always remember and we thank Clay for giving you those special moments.
And now, we must discuss the hair and Clay’s new look. After getting over the shock of realizing this was really our Clay, and watching it over and over ad nauseum, I’ve decided I like it. I like it a lot. People are complaining they couldn’t see his eyes, but I saw them quite well. If this is an easier style for him, that’s fine. If he’s making a statement, that’s fine too. I don’t care if he grows it to the floor or shaves it off, as long as he keeps singing!
Here’s a sample of some of your feelings after seeing Clay again:
Seeing Clay again was like "coming home". Didn't realize how much I'd missed him until I saw that beautiful face and sparkling eyes and heard that incredible voice again!! It's been too long!!!!! He looks fantastic and sounds that way, too. Can't help myself. I love Clay Aiken!!! And I always will.
Carol from Princeton, Indiana
It was great to see Clay again, but...his performance teased us because as always, he left us wanting MORE..
Pam from Machesney Park Illinois
I wonder if just maybe this new look was a "one-off, " because I think the whole idea behind the look was to make an unmistakable statement to everyone. It said, in no uncertain terms: "I have matured; I am not the skinny spiky-haired guy; not the nerdy-looking guy; but I am still the same Clay I always was."
And wasn't he just enjoying his moment, even while absolutely making the night fantastic for the impersonator?
And I think too that it was also a statement made to those who would pull him down:
"See, you have thrown everything you could at me, and I am still standing tall.
I never was the guy you tried to make me out to be, and I will stay true to myself and my values."
It didn't hurt a bit that he was dressed to the nines. What a suit. Reeked of class.
Well, his whole turn on stage reeked of class...as always!
Liz from Toronto, ON
Clay is "HAUT" hot in other words
Diane from Michigan
Can't really describe how I felt the time I saw him again and looking oh so hotly different. I am a mother in her 40's yet I felt an instant flashback spiritually, physically and emotionally. I went 25 years back....Shaun Cassidy, the Hardy Boys, and even Leif Garrett and Robby Benson....Clay makes be feel very young at heart, always in the mood for love. Clay is definitely "A BLAST FROM THE (MY) PAST"
Issa from Grand Haven , MI
"Clay Aiken has been reborn in the eyes of the world with his polished and professional appearance on the AI5 finale. But for those of us 'in the know' he is still the Clay who touched us three years ago, no matter what the hairstyle (which by the way I love) . . . Clay is still Clay!! (Our Man) Clay has piqued the interest of millions who haven't seen him in three years (or never saw him) and they have no idea what is in store for them later this year. I can hardly wait until the news of his CD release and major publicity campaign begins, this was merely the tip of the iceberg and a tease - kudos to his management team (or Clay) for this brilliant move. It's going to be a very good year."
Ann from Reading PA (Claymate since the Wildcard Show in 2003 and 27 Clay concerts to date)
Watching Clay walk out and on to the stage last night on AI, I thought to myself, the kid is gone, a mature man has emerged with class and style. He is a kindred compassionate spirit as well, seeing the twinkle in his eyes as he sang his song and made the dream of this young man come true was awesome.
Robin from Chillicothe, OH
When he first came out...i thought...."well there's definitely a new look" I actually didn't think too much about the new look because i just wanted to hear that voice!!! LOL I LOVED seeing him react to the kid who was so surprised to see him beside him on stage. He was so sweet...grinning from ear to ear...and i think he even ENCOURAGED the kid to SING with him... I loved the interaction between the two of them. Later, I went back and rewatched it...this time paying more attention to the look...at first, i hated it. Now, after watching that clip a few times (i won't say how many times LOL) i think it's growing on me a bit. I don't like how it hides his eyes. When Clay flipped it...i think it looked better...cuz then we could see those eyes twinkle.
TO CLAY'S HAIRSTYLIST: Ya know the kid in the DISNEY movie "HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL" who plays TROY BOLTING? His bangs are shorter...the sides are a little longer...how about that hair cut?? Then we can gaze into those eyes!!! (and he'll hypmotize us all again and we'll all go out and buy seven or more of the new cd...if it ever comes out).
Julie
Clay, it would seem, is the master of jaw-dropping "Wow!" moments. From his first "Where is that voice coming from?!" AI-2 audition in Atlanta to last night's A-5 finale show-stopping surprise capped off with his signature stellar performance, Clay has never failed to capture the audience's attention, their admiration, and ultimately their hearts. Clay's fans remain in a constant state of awe of their measure of a man, even as their faith is his character remains untarnished. That one man was able to make an audience of over 30 million viewers forget for a few minutes the hottest talent competition on television this season because they were mesmerized by his new look and then his voice, speaks to why this man eclipsed the winner of AI-2 and has been named the favorite all-time American Idol and most beloved reality TV star ever. In the words of Randy Jackson, "We had a hot one in the house that night!"
Judy from San Mateo, California
"I think I got about 2 hours sleep last night and I'm still so excited I'm ready to burst. The new Clay was stunning! Mature, hot, classy and ohhhhh, that voice!
Just talked to my hubby about the show again and he said that if AI had intended to make fun of Clay, it sure didn't come off that way. He said Clay looked and acted like a star. Handled the kid with class, shared the spotlight and shone. He's always liked Clay, but this is the first time I've actually heard him rave about him.
I thought he looked absolutely gorgeous! I'm totally loving the new look, but that's not to say everybody will...or even that he'll keep it. Time will tell!"
Bev
I love Clay and I'm so glad he gave us a guest appearence.I think they should ask him to come on every season. I hope he will come on next season to promote his new CD.
Ed from Atlanta
Thanks to everyone above for their contributions. And thank you, Clay, for being who you are and for returning to what you do best. Can’t wait for your new cd this summer! And your tour! But for now, I’m off to watch the tape for the zillionth time plus one.
WELCOME BACK CLAY!!!!!
