What’s up with the hate going on? Even when Kat is brilliant like she was Tuesday, she still gets reamed.

I’ll start out by saying; I usually hate it when someone changes up a song to “make it their own”. I also do not like superfluous runs in songs. For the most part for me, it’s like they are trying to cover up bum notes, not to mention I just don’t like it in the first place. I will also admit that Katharine does do a lot of runs in her songs but some, “If I Fell” for example, add to it. Kelly Clarkson is notorious for this as well.
Tuesday night Katharine sang “Over the Rainbow” in case you missed it, and in case you didn’t I have a feeling you know where I’m going. This was a song choice I thought would send her home if she didn’t make so unidentifiable with Kim Locke or for that matter Judy Garland, which the usual flood of comparisons would come rolling in. I could already hear Randy; “Yo! Judy Garland was one of the best singers in the known universe dawg! And you’re not even close, sorry.” Paula; “Geeez. You know Kim Locke in season 2….this is hard…. Uhh….huh” Simon; “Katharine, when you do a song that is so identifiable with a singer as that one you can’t just sing it you have to make it different so you avoid comparisons to the original blah…blah…blah.” Katharine knew that. As it was after she sang, the judges comments were on point and Paula’s usual irrelevant comment to Kat was not only lucid, it was the best comment/advice anyone had given her all season. How many times has Paula given someone not a male, a standing O?
This performance for me and my wife of 18 years (we both forgot our anniversary this year and this is my card) was the best rendition of “Over the Rainbow” we had ever seen or heard. And we’ve seen a lot and heard a lot. This was the first time I ever started clapping halfway through a song….that was on TV. (Is that the same thing as talking to yourself?) I was hoping that she would sing the, little known and lesser sung, first verse to help make her departure from other versions more concrete. The a capella rendition of this verse was pure magic. When the classical guitar joined in she was in perfect pitch. Her lower register was clear and pure. When Katharine leaned her head bank and hit the second chorus of “Somewhere….” It was a subtle but a perfect finger print for her. And the audience clapped in appreciation. On the last, “Then why, oh why can’t I”, the little move to her falsetto before the last long held note was chilling and seemed effortless. This was signature perfection. It was not over sung at all. It was the perfect combination of subtleness and bravado. She did not stretch. Had Katherine sang like this all season, it would always have been a contest for second from day one. I just know Harold Arlen looking down on this is even gladder he scribbled this little tune out on that napkin. This was the moment of the season for me and quite a few writers I have respect for.
But reading the net today, you would never know it. Everyone reading this knows that I do like Katharine the best. But had Paris or Elliott or anyone from this season done that, I would be writing the same column but for a different reason. They would not have gotten the rude nasty, an insidious treatment Katharine has received and continues to get. The tripe that I have seen here on Fiends and other websites and blogs is just over the edge. It’s ridiculous. It’s one thing to have an opinion. It’s another to call Katharine names and say that this was the worst performance ever on Idol. Where are your ears and more importantly you freaking brains? My guess is there’s nothing wrong with your brains, it’s your psyche. I am most surprised that a lot of these comments are coming from Elliott fans. You need not go too far to see some of these things I speak of. Just scroll down the page to just about any Americana Idol article and read the comments. Anyone who thinks this was the worst Idol performance ever really needs snap out of it because this is not an opinion; it is just couched that way. Get real. That’s like saying peanut butter tastes too much like peanuts.
My advice to you that are participating in this fruitless endeavor seek help and stay off the boards until you doctor gives you clearance. It’s one thing to say you don’t like Katharine’s voice or her singing or just her in general. But to call her a B….! That borders on a threat and I guess I would not want to put my name on vile comments like that just like you guys have conveniently not done.
Really, if you have the time to do this, you have too much time on your hands. So go get some help. Don’t go to Lucy and spend a nickel. Come back when you no longer run with sharp objects and can play with others.
