We have an incredible five left, but if we are honest with ourselves, do our favorites deserve to be our favorites? Do all of them deserve to win this? Do all of them need to win this? And, I think the newly leaked song list may be bogus, by the way….

So who do we have left? A glorified, hard rockin’ bald hottie, with some dynamite performances. A brunette bomb shell, with a silky pure voice and the hair extensions to match. A gray haired, soulful performer. A beyond her years jazzy singer, who can bust out and shake some Beyonce as well. Last but not least, we have the humble Hathaway dead ringer, who seems just as surprised as us that he is so dang consistent.
If we look at this negatively, we have the straining, screaming rocker, who gets special treatment with mariachi guitars and light shows, two pimp spots, and than glares like a serial killer into the camera. The play boy pin-up who flashes he nana to solicit for votes, and has daddy and mommy ready to strangle anyone who disagrees with her shrill belt. The seizure induced elderly man, who bores you when he just sings and frightens babies when he dances. The Minnie mouse little girl, who has a granny with a cd on the charts right now, but still apparently needs to be on AI to get a deal, oh and that granny picks every ballad she sings, unfortunately, and what she wears. Lastly, that funny looking guy who sings lots of boring songs and than takes favorites and like changes them around or something. (Yes, it’s hard for me to write anything negative about Elliott, that’s the best I could do.)
Who deserves our votes? Let’s take a look at the final five, and maybe you can re-evaluate where your votes go. I’m going to try to be completely unbiased here. Oh, and along the way, we will take a look at what the possibly phony leaked song list says they are singing…..
KATHARINE MCPHEE:
Rumor has it: She’s singing “Against All Odds,” which was sang twice, just last season. Should have gone for Pat! The list does have her singing the “Cherry Tree” song. I don’t think either of these performances are going to be really “wow.” I think our bombshell might bomb. Ya know, Scott Savol’s only really good performance was this song, because he’s really an against all odds kind of guy, Kat…not so much.
The more I listen to “I Have Nothing,” the more I realize I was too easy on her. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. There were some awesome moments and there were some doozies. But, that’s how most all of her performances go, even though mommy is a vocal coach. Rumor also has it that her dad went up to the judges table crying when the judges ripped her apart after that performance, and only Paula would actually talk to him. Can we say stage parents? I mean, she’s 22 for goodness sake, she can fight her own battles.
Kelly Clarkson never had an off night, Ruben never had a bad night even though I wasn’t wowed, Fantasia was also consistent at what she did, whether I liked it or not. Carrie Underwood was the first idol winner with some poor performances during her run on the show. I don’t think Katharine has the fan base of Carrie, and to be honest, when Carrie has an on night, Kat’s belt can’t hold a candle to it. If Kat wins, we’d have performances like ‘The Voice Within,” and “Who wants to Live Forever” to look back on. I am all about the vocals, and it pains me whenever I think someone with superior vocals loses out too early, examples, Tamyra, heck RJ, Clay, Trenyce, Rickey, George, LaToya, etc… If Kat went home after this week, I wouldn’t feel that way, because she’s been too inconsistent.
So many kids watch this show, most of my daycare kids watch it. I have major problems with her breasts exploding from the top of her dress and her seemingly insistence on showing off some major leg. You can even see her hand pull the dress back in pictures. Sure, she might not have meant to show quite as much as she did, but she had shown quite enough already. I can’t stand that kind of thing. I don’t mind mid drift as much, as long as it’s not too high or too low, but boobs and crotch, that’s a problem. And I don’t like that my ten year old boys saw all that. I also hate the fact that people voted for that. If I wasn’t really a Kat fan before, this sealed the deal. If it came down to her and anyone else, I’d vote for that someone else.
Am I being harsh? Probably. I just don’t feel, as Idolheaded does, that her vocal chords were kissed by God. I would like to think that if God kissed someone’s vocal chords they would no longer have pitchy, messy runs, or problems sustaining all of their high belting notes. Get on the ball, god! Anyway, I’m supposing this will anger Kat fans, but I’m hoping to make those who haven’t quite picked a favorite, which is where I was at this point last year think again about Kat.
CHRIS DAUGHTRY:
Rumor has it: He is singing “Renegade” and “I Dare You,” which would make me totally up for the position as Chris’s personal manager, since I picked both of those. These are the smartest song choices of all the ones leaked, and I hope this is really the case.
Seriously, Chris doing “Renegade” is going to be the Chris moment we’ve all been waiting for. I hope that leak is correct! So Chris has been the chosen one from the start, and frankly he’s decently deserving. Yes, they give him extensive light shows and special instrumental sections, and yes it makes me want to hurl my shoe at him, but I still don’t loathe him in anyway. When it comes down to it, he has had one really weak performance, and that was “What If.” His growl, like Taylor’s “soul” covers up some major pitch problems. David Foster was correct, Chris has very poor placement and support, but for that fact, him sounding as good as he does is pretty amazing. If they force him to have some vocal lessons, who knows what Chris could do!
He’s performed in many a bar, and with a band apparently, and he married a widow who had a couple kids. He’s got a good back story there. Kat does not have a good back story. This does not mean he deserves our votes. As Kat song choices will only hurt her this week, if they are true, Chris’s are right on the money. I have a feeling Chris will gain new fans this week, and solidify his hold on a top two position.
Last week, him and Elliott had the stand out performances, and I almost threw Chris votes, but I just couldn’t. I have a hard time voting for those who have been pushed on us, and again, he hasn’t been completely vocally consistent. Because of how much he has been pushed, I don’t feel like he needs my personal vote. My mom votes for him and Elliott evenly.
If Chris wins we can look back at a pretty awesome run on idol, but I don’t think his win will move anyone to tears and I don’t think he needs to win. I think he would to better not to, as I have no idea what “idol” single they’d force him to sing on the finale. Yikes, frightening. That’s another reason I don’t vote Chris, I think he’s a sure fire winner regardless, and has a pretty awesome career ahead of him with the right cd.
So there you have it, Chris isn’t totally undeserving, but I don’t think it will be an emotional, awe kind of win. It will be like, oh…well…didn’t they pretty much tell us he was going to win during the Hollywood rounds?
PARIS BENNETT:
Rumor has it: That she is singing the Mary J Blige song from my list, and Prince’s KISS!!!
I don’t know what she was thinking with the “Kiss” song. I know she likes to take chances and evolve her seventeen year old self, but I think this song is a BIG mistake. I hate the lyrics for her, and it’s just not great for showing off your vocals. I think she is in just as much trouble as Kat this week, but I think she will be going home.
So, if she is probably going home, doesn’t she need your votes to save her? Ya know, Paris and Kat are the most immature in responding to being safe, since we had Jasmine and Diana on the show. Also, I don’t think anyone should be on this show who has a family member with a cd on the charts RIGHT NOW. No, I don’t think Ann Nesby could single handedly make Paris a start like AI could, but still Paris has many connections through that and that is frustrating for the other contestants who don’t have that at all.
Also, Paris has been intensely inconsistent, from the mediocrity of the semi-finals, to some dang great performances lately, and then some boring, forgettable ballads in between. The combination of this, her grandmother, and how young Paris is, I really don’t think Paris deserves your votes and it’s time for her to go. A talented young lady, and I hope we see her around, but yeah, I don’t see her winning this thing. I don’t even have that much to write about her.
TAYLOR HICKS:
Rumor Has It: That he is singing “Play That Funky Music” with a Beatles song, which doesn’t make sense, but Bon Jovi has also been rumored to confirm him singing “Who Says You Can’t Go Home.” If he sings the first with the latter, then I think I guessed both his as well. HE BETTER GET THE PIMP SPOT, he’s the only one who hasn’t had it throughout the finals, and Chris has had it TWICE!
Both songs have good tempos, which Taylor really needs right now. He needs to get back to all his Taylorness, not that he has to worry, since vote for the worst has picked him up as well. That with the soul patrol, and I would have to say, NO, he does not need anymore freaking votes. He’s never been in the bottom three, and has had performances like “Not Fade Away,” and banal ballads that I can’t even name for you because I don’t remember them very well. He is a novelty act, albeit a pretty good novelty act, and that just reminds me of Ruben and his velvet teddy bearness, and I just can’t stand decent novelty acts winning out over real vocal talent. If it came down to Taylor and Kat in the final two, I probably just wouldn’t vote at all. I think Taylor’s a great guy, and he’s had a couple shining moments. However, it looks like he doesn’t even want to win this thing. I think he’s better off going home asap and getting his band back together and hitting the road, he’d make a killing! Taylor’s already gotten some great recordings from pre-idol, and with all the performing he’s done, I don’t think he needs this thing at all to succeed.
ELLIOTT YAMIN:
Rumor Has It: That he’s singing George Benson’s “On Broadway” and either Michael Buble’s “Home” or “Save the Last Dance for Me” Okay, I want you to take a lyric at the home lyrics and have a dang good laugh with me:
Another aeroplane
Another sunny place
I’m lucky I know
But I wanna go home
Mmmm, I’ve got to go home
Let me go home
I’m just too far from where you are
I wanna come home
And I feel just like I’m living someone else’s life
It’s like I just stepped outside
When everything was going right
And I know just why you could not
Come along with me
That this is not your dream
But you always believed in me
And I’m surrounded by
A million people I
Still feel alone
Oh, let me go home
Oh, I miss you, you know
Let me go home
I’ve had my run
Baby, I’m done
I gotta go home
Let me go home
It will all be all right
I’ll be home tonight
I’m coming back home
Okay, so this is possibly worse than him just singing “Bad Day.” If this rumor is right than I may throw my shoe at Elliott this week! “I’ve had my run, baby I’m done, I gotta go home!” Is he serious! I am praying he is actually singing ‘Save the Last Dance For Me,” because as funny as these lyrics are, I think it would be impossible for them to not be prophetic.
Anyway, Elliott is the last contestant left who had to rise from obscurity just based on his talent, and a pretty kickin’ back story. It doesn’t hurt, that he is possibly the most honest, humble guy we’ve ever had. He’s not just overtly nice like George Huff, he even admits when he wasn’t a fan of a guest judges music, that’s frickin’ honesty. Has he been consistent? Vocally, abso-frickin-lutely, performance wise, perhaps not. But let’s be fair. Kat went to a conservatory and has done musical theatre, Chris has played many a bar, Taylor’s been touring for years, and Paris has it in her blood. Elliott used to stand there and do karaoke at TGI Fridays. For that fact, I can be forgiving of the awkwardness that was “Knocks Me Off my Feet” and the blahness that was country night, though country night sucked for most of them.
The fact is we’ve gotten to watch Elliott grow as a performer, something we don’t usually get to watch. We got to watch him grow in confidence, and there was a time when we believed in him more than he did. I am a sucker for underdogs, and Elliott is the ULTIMATE under dog.
Kelly, though it is crazy to think it now, got absolutely NO face time and came in rockin’ with some Aretha and Simon didn’t even remember her, much like Elliott busting out with some Stevie. Tamyra, Justin, Nikki, Ryan, Jim, and AJ had all gotten obnoxious amounts of face time, and Kelly got NONE! Tamyra and Justin were poised to take it all, and when they were doing bets at the beginning and odds, Kelly didn’t have a chance in hell according to them. Okay, I’ll stop talking about Kelly, but all I’m saying, is it has been 3 seasons since we’ve had someone rise completely from obscurity, “Against All Odds.” (sorry Kat.) Every other year, they’ve been shoved in our face. I adore Kelly, and Elliott is my male Kelly.
Obviously, I think he deserves your votes. And I apologize for not being as unbiased as I could have been. I’m ridiculous when it comes to my E. I wanted to try and hop off the E-train for awhile and be objective, but I guess I couldn’t.
Elliott needs your votes. Could he have gotten anywhere without idol? Probably not. He doesn’t have Kat’s model good looks, Chris and Taylor’s band experience, or Paris’s gramma. Elliott needs your votes and he needs the title. I’m scared about his song choices this week, if the songs leaked are correct, I think he could have chose better….I’m freakin’ out!
