Amazing Race: The Amazing Race on April 26, 2006

It's getting down to the wire, folks! And true personalities are starting to show--from the snotty little princess (Mo) to the just-want-to-get-in-their-pants guy (one of the Frat boys--don't ask me which), to the salt of the earth (Fran & Barry). Throw in the hippies for comic relief (I like them best anyway), and Ray & Yolanda for drama, and we've got a show!

Five teams remain -- who will be eliminated next?

The teams leave in the order they arrived. Four of the teams leave with money--the fifth team (BJ & Tyler, aka the Hippies), leave with no money since they came in last the night before. Evidently at dinner, BJ & Tyler had asked everyone to put a little money in their car as they left in the morning.

Fran & Barry left first. They put $20 in BJ & Tyler's car. MoJo left next. They pretended to leave something in the car, but were really upset that BJ & Tyler were planning to Yield them at the next Yield. Ray & Yolanda left next, and left them $10. The frat boys left fourth, and as a joke left them an IOU for $100. As they wisely pointed out, it's a race, and they can't be helping other teams... BJ & Tyler seemed genuinely elated when they got to their car, that some of the other contestants had left them money.

Their first clue instructs them to fly to Perth, Austraulia, where they will take a taxi to King's Park and find the State War Memorial to get their next clue.

The first four teams arrive at the airport close enough together that they all get on the only flight out to Perth. BJ & Tyler pick up a hitchhiker on the way to the airport, who turns out to be a bedouin. They have to stop for the gas, and the hitchhiker buys them gas, and juice, and a candy bar. How cool is that!

BJ & Tyler enter the airport as the flight is boarding. MoJo are very smug, thinking they have finally lost the hippies. Not so fast! BJ & Tyler sweet talk their way onto the plane, too. So they all arrive in Perth at the same time.

On the flight to Perth, BJ & Tyler beg for money, and end up with over $300 -- much more than the other teams got for this leg of the race (I hope they gave Fran & Barry & Ray & Yolanda back the money that they had given them).

At the memorial, the next clue instructs them to go to the Ferry Station and take the Ferry to Rottnest Island. But when they get to the Ferry, it is closed until the next morning. So all the teams head off to hotels or hostels to spend the night.

The next morning all five teams get on the same Ferry to RottNest Island. There, they must take a tandem bike on a 3 mile ride to the lighthouse for their next clue. The trail is up and down a lot, and evidently the person in front has to work harder than the one in back. The only team that seems to have an easy time of it is Fran & Barry--evidently they bike a lot. However, they are last to arrive at the lighthouse, so perhaps they went a bit slower than the others.

At the lighthouse, the clue is a Detour: Sea or Sand.

For Sea, both team members must don snorkeling gear (no air tank, just the snorkel for breathing and a face mask), and each team member must retrieve a crawfish (which looks like a large lobster!) from a trap on the ocean floor. Not all of the traps have crawfish in them.

For Sand, both team members must take 40 large branches and drag them 126 yards to the sand dunes. This is the way they help stop erosion of the beach in Austraulia (pretty cool, actually).

Eric & Jeremy (aka the Frat Boys) pick Sea, and get their crawfish pretty quickly. They are the first to finish.

BJ & Tyler pick Sand, and it is evidently much harder than it sounds--the branches are very heavy. But they finish second.

Fran & Barry pick Sand, and finish third.

MoJo pick Sea. Joseph finds one and retrieves it pretty quickly, but Mo freaks out and is scared to pick it up. Joseph finally talks her into it, and they finish fourth.

Ray & Yolanda pick Sand, and finish fifth. Ray says it is a good workout.

From there, the clue instructs them to make their way to Fremantle Prison. This prison has a network of tunnels underneath it, that were used to transport water long ago.

They have to get back on the Ferry to get to Fremantle, and Eric & Jeremy are all alone on the first ferry. BJ & Tyler are right behind them, and decide to take a ferry to Hillary and then a taxi to Fremantle, rather than wait for the next Fremantle Ferry. The other three teams arrive later, and take the Fremantle Ferry together.

At the prison, the clue is a Road Block. One team member must first go in the prison, find a specific cell block, and then search the cells in that cell block for a flashlight and some batteries. Then they must take the flashlight to the tunnels, and search the tunnels for their next clue. Some of the tunnels are dry, and some are wet. If they choose to search the wet ones, they must paddle a boat through the tunnels. The dry ones they can just walk/crawl through.

Eric & Jeremy get there an hour before anyone else, but Jeremy doesn't understand the clue or doesn't read it correctly--he has a hard time finding the cell block, and then the tunnels. The other teams start arriving before he finishes.

MoJo get there second, and Joseph decides to do the task. BJ & Tyler get there next, and Tyler does the task. He tries to work with Joseph but Joseph just refuses to cooperate. Yolanda does the task for Ray & Yolanda, and Fran does it for Fran & Barry (even tho she has misgivings about being able to do it). Tyler and Fran do find the tunnels together.

In any case, they all muddle through the task, and their next clue tells them that their next desitination is the pit stop--at the South Breakwater. It is only 1.5 miles away, but some of the teams go looking for a taxi.

Eric & Jeremy decide to jog there, while MoJo takes a taxi. In the end it is a foot race between them, and Eric & Jeremy narrowly win.

For coming in first, Eric & Jeremy get a trip for two to Hong Kong. Mo asks if they are giving away two trips, but no such luck.

BJ & Tyler arrive next, and appear very upbeat.

Ray & Yolanda arrive fourth, and they too seem happy.

Fran & Barry walk up last. Fran keeps saying, "I'm not going to cry," but she seems to be having a hard time holding back the tears. They are eliminated, but Barry keeps smiling while Fran buries her face in his shoulder. Personally, I think they did great. And, gee, they made it all the way to Austraulia! Hope they got to spend a few days there before heading back home...
