American Idol: Elliott Yamin: A Song For Us

It is always an incredibly special moment when singer and song truly connect.

We, as Idol fans, have been lucky enough to see that several times. There was Clay’s moving performance of Bridge Over Troubled Waters where he relived for us in song his personal commitment to the service of others less fortunate, and even more intimately, allowed us a glimpse into a bit of his own internal pain. When Fantasia sang Summertime, you knew unequivocally that she had spent some hot lazy summer afternoons singing a sweet lullaby full of hopes and dreams to her own little daughter.

There was no doubt in my mind that we also saw one of those special moments last night with Elliott. His pleasure at being able to perform a song that was clearly meaningful to him and to offer an interpretation which was a tribute to a favorite artist (Donny Hathaway, as recorded in 1971) was palpable. Whether or not Leon Russell’s simple, lovely lyrics or the Hathaway-esque gospel-inflected jazzy interpretation of the song were to your taste, the sheer joy of the performance spoke to most of us.

I loved his performance last night, not only because I am a jazz aficionado as well as a discriminating listener when it comes to vocal skills, although I am both of those things. What set this performance above the rest was the shared dialogue between performer and audience. It was as though this young man held out his hand to America and said “come share what is magical and special to me”. He did everything but bounce, he was so happy and excited to be on that stage, doing what was important to him. It was like puppies and babies, irresistible.

I think it’s a great misfortune that what makes Elliott ‘tick’ musically, is a genre that is fairly inaccessible to a large portion of Idol’s demographic. The intersection between jazz, soul and gospel is clearly Elliott’s milieu (a nice Jewish boy singing gospel?? Who knew?). And while some of the most technically skilled singers are drawn to jazz with its use of the virtuoso human voice as a musical instrument, inextricably linked into a latticework with the melodic lines of the other instruments in the composition, this is after all a pop music singing competition.

That being said, I don’t worry about Elliott overly. His talent is so profound that he will be recognized and given opportunities by members of the jazz community. I don’t see him winning American Idol, although that would please me on his behalf. But I am very glad that he entered the contest, was chosen to perform for America, and lasted long enough to share what was a very special moment with his audience last night.
