American Idol: Top 6: Love is Difficult and So Are the Songs

Posted by: LindaK on Apr 26, 2006 - 12:34 PM

We all predicted this theme would be rough, but I don’t think we realized just how rough. Why were the judges so negative tonight? And will America vote on performance, or favoritism?

If we voted based strictly on performance, tonight’s results would be predictable. If we voted based on our favorites without regard to Tuesday’s performances, the results would, and will be, unpredictable. I guess the safest thing to say is that with Idol, nothing is guaranteed and we should always expect the unexpected!

    Here’s what happened Tuesday:

    1. Kat: I Have Nothing
Kat must be reading the reviews, because I thought she really tried to put some personality into her performance and did a decent job. However, the judges disagreed. Randy said the song was too big for her, and Paula heard pitch problems, too much pushing, oversinging, and flat power notes. Simon thought it was old fashioned and cabaret.

    2. Elliott: A Song For You
I didn’t love this song, but I thought Elliott did a good job with it except for the low notes. I also thought he looked nervous, but no one commented on that. All three judges loved it and Paula even cried. I like Elliott and am glad he did well.

    3. Kellie: Unchained Melody
As soon as I heard what Kellie would be singing, I cringed. Listen to Clay’s version and you will realize how this song should be sung by an Idol. As for Kellie’s performance, I didn’t love it, but I didn’t think it was as awful as the judges said, and I actually felt bad at how tough they were with her. Yes she is the weakest singer remaining in the competition, and yes this was her second week in a row of poor reviews. That should mean danger, but I don’t think it does in this case.

    4. Paris: The Way We Were
Again, I thought it was better than the judges said. This girl has a powerhouse voice. Granted, the song was ‘old’ for her, but she is 17 and most songs are going to seem old for her! I always wonder how Paris would have done had she waited a few more years before entering this competition.

    5. Taylor: Just Once
Taylor, Taylor, Taylor. This could have been awesome. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the awesomeness to come. I thought parts of this, after the beginning were really good, but the judges only commented on the negative. The best thing was when David said that Taylor has potentially the most charisma, which is a very important part of being a star. The Soul Patrol really needs to vote tonight!

    6. Chris: Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman
It was a rock-sounding love song, but I actually liked this performance, except for the screaming. I still have a hard time understanding the words when Chris sings. My favorite part of the whole thing was when they made Chris lie on the floor to practice. Being a speech pathologist, it was obvious to me that they did this to help Chris with diaphragmatic breathing. It seemed like it did help him, and it was fun to watch.

    Idol Ramblings:
This is tough. Only Elliott and Chris received positive comments from the judges. I’m glad for Elliott, and I am amazed at myself for actually liking Chris tonight. If he can sing like this more often, I may be able to like him all the time. I thought Kat, Paris and Taylor had some wonderful moments, but these were ignored. Kellie had the weakest vocals of the night. However, I don’t think Kellie is leaving us just yet. At this point, people have their favorites, and will vote for them no matter how they actually perform. Based on that, and the fact that 4 of our 6 have already been in the bottom 3, who is actually leaving is anyone’s guess.
Did you vote? (were you able to???)
