What could have been a great night was just average. There was only one good song choice and we had to wait til last to hear it. By Idolhead Ed

It’s really time American Idol at least allowed these guys to scour the net. We writers can help. We just want to see a great show so that means we need great songs. Tonight was not bad by any means but on the heels of last week it so paled in comparison..... and so didn’t have to. Do ya’ll out there foller me? I thought so. I am still humming that great stuff we had last week. That won’t be happening this week. Let’s look at this bunch of warblers.
Katharine: “I Have Nothing”
First I thought “Oh No she’s singing first” not good. second; She’s singing “I Have Nothing”. Two strikes against her before she even starts. I was really worried. Well, I didn’t have to be. Although Katharine should have picked something else (This song has been killed a time or two on Idol) she did well. Not the best of the night but good for the Idolhead. I liked how she changed it up. She tried to put too much movement in the performance it but sounded great to the Idolhead’s tin ear. (Yeah I’m still bucking for the seat on the judges table) I didn’t hear the same performance the judges heard. I’m not so sure that the judges were overcompensating for the unbelievable praise they heaped on her last week. This is easily the most biting critique Kat has ever endured. It was not deserved. I think the judges got together and looked at the score card and said “Wait a minute. We haven’t dogged Kat since the top 12 started. OK. Tonight’s the night” I also have to say that the envy train can stay parked tonight because my prediction of praise from the judges didn’t happen. The Kat un-fans must be loving it. With who is left Kat may find herself in the bottom 3 but shouldn’t worry. I don’t think she will be there long. One other good thing about this performance is that the cameraman didn’t feel we needed to look at Kat’s tonsils tonight. Thanks for small favors. Grade A-
Elliott: “A Song for You”
I’m with the Dawg on this one. I hated that arrangement and if you’ve ever heard the song you know what me and the Dawg are talking about. Even though Elliott was close to the best tonight he could have been best with the right arrangement. I’m also not with “cry me a river” Paula. What’s up with the crocodile tears? I swear, I think this started last week she was so freaking out when Simon was giving Kat the ultimate praise. She actually tried her damndest to shut Simon down as if to say “Siiiimon!. Shhh! A guy is supposed to win this year, remember?” So I think this was her continuation. The only other person who should have been crying after that performance was his mom and of course Kellie Pickler. You’ll understand that in a minute. All of this being said, Elliot kicked ass. He took a shambles of an arrangemsnt and still made it work. He was spot on and showed the confidence he needs to push on. I will again say he is the best male voice in the competition and has been from the first day of the top 23. I didn’t really count Bobby Bennett. Elliott should be safe. That is if America’s listening.Grade A+
Kellie: “Unchained Melody”
This is that Kellie thing I was talking about. Kellie had a chance tonight to make up for last week’s blunder but did even worse. As my wife said she doesn’t think America will be as forgiving. I like Kellie but tonight she did not show up. This was the worst performance of the night. This may have shown that Kellie is in over her head at this point. I honestly think some of her ardent fans won’t be voting as hard tonight. If for no other reason but to send her a message. She seemed lost from the time she stepped up to the mike. Kellie was off pitch almost the entire song. Last week she tried to put out the fire before it burned her up. This week the fire spread too fast and she knew it. If all is right with the world she will be in the bottom 3 and go home but this is Idol. I do think she will see the “Voyage to the bottom of the 3”for the first time. Cute is only good for a little while. You gotta sing sometime and sing great. Grade D
Paris: “The Way We Were”
This was just aiight. Not a good song choice. Probably the most boring song of the night. Paris on the other hand looked great. She was the most pitchy I can remember her. She didn’t look that comfortable at all. She actually looked a bit worn out. It’s as if she was thinking about her medical school exams. And I’m afraid this talented (more talented than at least 3 others still here) may be heading home to get started on the medical career. Even though she didn’t do her best her voice is still the bomb. Grade B
Taylor: “Just Once”
Just once I’d like to see this guy in the bottom 3 because tonight he deserves it. This was easily the worst Taylor has ever done. He let the music drown him out and was off key more than “Just Once”. It just didn’t happen at all. All you Taylor fans you have to know this was the case tonight. And Paula please sit down! You’re goiung to throw your back out! Geez! He just wasn’t that good tonight. Will he be taking the “Voyage to the bottom of the 3”? Are you kidding me? Not a chance. Clay Aiken has a better chance than Taylor. He will undeservingly be safe not even gracing the stage tomorrow night. Grade D+
Chris: “Have You Ever Loved a Woman”
This was the thing! Perfect song choice. What a great job. This is why if Chris wins, he will win. More than anyone else this season, Chris picks the right songs. I’m glad he salvaged the night.. He sang it with passion and command. This one goes in my "favorites of the season" vault. This is what everyone could have and should have done. Chris will be safer than the diamonds in “Marathon Man”. Grade A++
What a night. I was expecting so much more but I’ll take it. Chris, Elliott, and Kat made it worth it for me. As for the other 3 Paris was OK but OK will not be good enough at this stage. There were three definitive tiers tonight. There was Chris and Elliott, then Kat and Paris and as Simon would say in an utterly different league for the wrong reasons, Taylor and Kellie. My picks for the bottom 3 are not whom I would want there but because of the rabid fan base of Taylor this is the way it will shake out. Paris (undeservingly), Kat (most undeservingly) and Kellie, deservingly. And Paris will be bidding farewell I am sad to say. I do hope I’m wrong and Kellie goes. If all was right on Idol the bottom 3 would be Taylor, Kellie and Paris with Kellie going home. But the way it looks is the guys will be on top tomorrow night…….so to speak.
I know AI would love to have a male winner this season and they are well on their way to it. The problem is I’m afraid the wrong guy will win; Taylor. Elliott and Chris have far superior singing voices and either one would be an admirable winner. But it always makes for a better final to have one girl and one guy. You may not agree. That’s OK. It’s alright to be wrong. I’ve been wrong a time or two. I think the two best in show are Katharine and Elliott and I think this final would be the best ever. I think Katharine is the only girl left that has a chance at making the finals. Kellie can not continue singing the way she has the last two weeks and survive. No way. I love her but….. Kellie just looks defeated out there now. We will see how events unfold tomorrow.
