Millions of votes are cast each week to out contestants, but to me, only a couple are truly deserving. Elliott has the male vocals and genuineness I’ve been waiting for on this show, and it would be a disgrace to America if he is voted off any time soon. Read on to see why Elliott is such an incredible talent and maybe a few of you will decide to hop on the E-Train. By Jlynn206

“It’s in Her Kiss,” was the first time we got to see Elliott, in the Hollywood rounds with one of the twins. His voice soared, and it is still a clip I play over and over. To hear what I am talking about, head over to yaminions.com. His voice just soared, and in 15 seconds he managed to sing the song with an Elliott flare and make it all his own. However, I’ve learned my lesson from thinking I’ve picked a favorite from the Hollywood rounds, so I was hesitant.
However, fast forward to semi-finals week one, and Elliott busts out with some Stevie and tears the house down. A male coming out singing Stevie and nailing it, is just like a girl busting out with some Mariah and nailing it. That’s how difficult Stevie Wonder’s songs are. For Elliott, it’s just his usual thing, as he has sang this song all the time back home doing karaoke. How incredible is that? I also think, that when Elliott gets to do his own tour, he will stick with smaller venues. He is all about his voice and not the spectacle of it all. Therefore, on the smaller stage of the semifinals he looks much more at home. But then, how do we account for “I Don’t Wanna Be,” and his results show performance of “Somebody to Love,” which he performed and sang the heck out of. I think Elliott has some more tricks up his sleeve and also more to learn.
The greatest performance this season by far, is still “Moody’s Mood for Love.” I thought he would falter after doing so well with Stevie. How do you go up from there? Elliott’s breath control and phrasing in this song are impeccable. If you missed this performance, go to yaminions, I listen to this literally everyday. Elliott can croon, he can go bluesy, he can go jazzy, he can do R&B, and from the opinion of the masterclass lady and myself, he can probably nail the heck out of some opera! Versatility is key in Idol, unless we’re discussing season 2, which we are not.
Creative and inventive runs are not many on Idol. You have to be a singers singer to really go unique places and make things your own. Elliott does this so effortlessly, that you would NEVER guess he hadn’t heard “Somebody to Love” before. This bothers some of America, because it can be hard to handle a song your used to with a new pacing, phrasing, and melodic spin on it. I believe this is part of why people have trouble “getting” Elliott. If you are a musician, you can’t help getting it. It’s all right there like a vocal fantasy, that he continues to pull of over and over. Many naysayers claim that Elliott is the same week in and week out. I urge you to watch “Heaven,” and “Teach Me Tonight” back to back. Or “I Don’t Wanna Be,” and “Tomorrow Never Comes.” He brings such different things to the table vocally on each of these songs.
Randy has said a lot of things about Elliott being a bit pitchy. Elliott does a lot of intricate, interesting runs, that you would have to really break down within the chord to decipher if it is in anyway pitchy. To me, the only truly pitchy note Elliott has done all season was at the beginning of “Knocks Me Off My Feet.” That’s it, one bum note the entire season, which is a lot more than we can say for most of our remaining contestants.
Difficulty in song selection is a must conversation piece when discussing Elliott. While Taylor sang “Not Fade Away,” with a total of four notes in it, Elliott chose a song with intricate modulations and key changes. While a few of our contestants chose some of the simplest Queen songs available, Elliott went for what Queen even called one of the most difficult in their whole catalogue. Voters are rewarding safe mediocrity, while this kid is taking a daring step every time, and he isn’t going to dance like my grampa, ask Simon what difficult means, get on his knees and hump the air, glare at you into the camera, smolder at you into the camera, or any of the other nonsense that has gone on this season. Elliott is going to sing his heart out for you day in and day out, with the raw, honest, genuine, incredible performances that E-Train fans have come to adore.
Simon said it was possible that Elliott is the best male vocalist we’ve ever had. I immediately began re-evaluating every male contestant on idol, like the obsessed freak I am. I didn’t have to think too hard. Clay and Anwar were the best male vocalists we’d had, though Anwar showed major vocal flaws in the end, leaving Clay with the title out of four entire seasons. I love Clay’s voice, but it also has a minor nasality and twang to the tone. Clay definitely trumps Elliott on range, for what I can tell, unless E busts out some notes I didn’t know about. However, Clay trumps most of the vocal population on range. Both men have supreme breath control, but I think Elliott would actually win the game on technique. I’ve read many complaints about Elliott’s vibrato, which I love, I think it’s hot! (Yes I just referred to vibrato as being hot.) I think it comes down to what you personally prefer, a deeper, more bluesy, run crazy vocal, or a soaring, murder you with my money notes vocal. Both are awesome in their own way, but Elliott’s cd will get a lot more airplay in my car than Clay’s ever did.
I think I am almost done discussing Elliott’s incredible voice. I would just like to point out key vocal moments for Elliott that you should go take a listen to before voting this week. How about, the bridge in “If You Really Love Me,” “Moody’s Mood” in its entirety, the soaring opening and then the “yes you will baby” parts of “Heaven,” the last run of “Knocks Me Off My Feet,” ALL of “Teach Me Tonight” but especially the end, “I Don’t Wanna Be” especially the bridge and his awesome falsetto note and the alternate rehearsal ending which you can find on yaminions, and try to find the results show performance of Queen week, he manages to outshine the first performance. Seriously, go listen to the alternate ending of “I Don’t Wanna Be,” it is the best run I’ve heard, possibly since I saw Gavin DeGraw live in concert!
Speaking of “I Don’t Wanna Be,” I must bring up the fact that Elliott nailed the heck out of the last notes in the bridge, which Bo didn’t even attempt to sing. When Bo did the song, he actually turned his head dramatically from the audience and pulled the mic away from his face. If I was a judge you better believe Bo NEVER would have heard the end of that one! Ever!
Personality matters a lot to America, as do looks. I never agree with people on attractiveness, as it is a lot more than looks that make someone attractive to me. A person’s life experience and how they handle situations is a big deal when I think of who is “hot” in my head. Honestly, I don’t really think of people that way. I know when someone is stereotypically attractive, but I never quite understood all the bashing over Elliott’s looks. Cut the kid a break! I always thought he had this adorable, endearing sexiness about him, as opposed to the in your face attempt at being appealing by Ace. As they’ve made him grow out his hair and change his facial hair, America seems to have decided he isn’t heinous anymore, but honestly he never was to begin with. This is a regular looking guy who isn’t relying on anything but his vocals, and that’s freaking sexy!
Also, the genuineness of this man is insane. He is so compassionate and caring towards the other contestants. He seems more concerned about them, then whether he gets voted off himself. He doesn’t have an heir of surprise about being in the bottom, and said so himself, that when he was in the bottom 2 he figured he was headed home, and was just trying to remember the words to his song. He was so supportive of Mandisa and Paris, and kept patting and nudging Ace and Bucky supportively while the three were waiting this week. Bucky says he will miss E the most, and rumor has it that Taylor and E are like best buds. He is so honest and raw and is trying to be anything or put on a persona. His tears about Stevie and whenever his mom talks are so heartfelt. I don’t think we’ve ever had a guy, so comfortable with who he is and what he’s been through, to let it all hang out on TV.
All of this, and we haven’t even had to bring up back story, which is, this guy’s been through the ringer health wise, since he was a little kid. He’s got 90% hearing loss in one year, and had many surgeries to attempt to correct it. In his teenage years he discovered he had diabetes, and from what I can tell there must be some dad issues with how much he brings up mom with no mention of dad. That’s exactly how I am when discussing my parents.
Elliott fans have been voting like crazy from the start! I don’t know how much more of America has caught on, but I would be devastated if this talent left the show in seventh place! I urge you to listen with an open mind this week and give Elliott the chance to wow you. I know most have chosen their die hard favorite, but we’ve had quite a few new Elliott fans this week, who were surprised at their change of heart. Hopefully, you can join them! Vote Elliot for his incredible tone, technique, breath control, phrasing, creativity, and his genuine personality!!!!! Vote like Yamin it for Funk-E!
