Tonight is songs from the 21st century. In other words, a way for everyone to do songs that are in their comfort zone. Chris will be accused of being a one-trick pony though while it will be OK for everyone else to sound the same. Lisa was up first doing ‘Because of You’ by THE American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, cuz she was her inspiration to do the show. Big mistake. HUGE. No one compares to Kelly. Just don’t touch it please. I thought it was very karaoke & she had nowhere near the power Kelly has. Randy said it is a very interesting way to start off to sing a song from a former winner & do an OK version. It was just aiight. Paula said it is a tough choice to do that, there is no doubt she can sing her butt off, but take a song that is so popular from a girl who got her start on the show you need to put your own twist on it to make it your own. Simon said the song was too big for her voice & there were parts that were painful. He said everything sounds great there but watch it back on TV & it didn’t work. Lisa said she thought no guts, no glory & went for it.

Kellie tells us she is doing ‘Suds in the Bucket’ by Sara Evans. I have no idea what she rambled on about in her explanation as to why she chose it. Her blush is toned down a little bit but the makeup still isn’t good. Her little pooch is exposed & reminds me of her skanky prom picture that is on the Net. I hated her song & her nasally tone. Randy said he likd that she returned to her country roots but confused about the song choice. It didn’t show enough for him. Paula said she is way better than that song choice. It didn’t show her range. Simon said the reality is she has 6 years of songs to choose from & she chose one w/ that title. She said it is cute. I saw Paula’s replacement, Debbie Gibson, in the audience with “alleged” husband stealer “allegedly” Kristy Swanson.

Ace did ‘Drops of Jupiter’ by Train. My husband loves this song & this band. He always raves about their acoustic version of Zeppelin that they did on Howard Stern. I think this is a song that Ace could do well with. & I was right. I liked it. Randy said he doesn’t know what is going on tonight. It is the wrong song for him & he didn’t sing it well. He said it doesn’t have a soul vibe & he didn’t like it. Paula said she won’t be as harsh & thought it was refreshing after the last 2 performances. This wasn’t her favorite choice & asked Ace if that was a real scar on his chest & he said yeah. Paula said one day he will have to tell her how he got it. Simon & Randy & the audience ooh cuz we all know Paula can get herself in trouble with the young boys. Simon said he understands what Randy is saying. They have to prove they are as good as the contemporary artists & that wasn’t a great performance & he thought it was karaoke. Ace said he likes the song & is glad he chose it.

Taylor sat with Ryan before he sang. Ryan said he is changing the youth of America one youth at a time & then showed a kid in the audience that has colored his hair to look like him. Taylor told him not to let them dye it. Ryan asked what “Soul Patrol” is. Taylor said it is his fans that have been with him a long time. He chose ‘Trouble’ by Ray Lamontagne. I have never heard of this song or this guy. I thought the song suited Taylor’s sound though. Hey, there’s George Huff. I miss his bounce. Randy said they are supposed to choose songs that are like what they want to make. He thinks it might suit him & he kind of got going at the end but it was like come on man. Taylor said he wanted to show his vocals. Paula agreed & said it was nice to see him stand behind the mic & song. She said he is an old soul & teaching the new generation about legends he looks up to. Simon said he quite liked the song & thought it was an excellent vocal & the only slight problem he had was the styling. He said it is very Clay Aiken. Paula said never in a million years could Clay pull that off. Simon said he isn’t saying Clay could have. Ryan said if that is Clay then Simon is very Kelly Clarkson. That didn’t even make sense & they acted like it was a huge burn.

Mandisa chose ‘Wanna Praise You’ by Mary Mary. I don’t know the song or the group but I did see them on that awful show that was only on a short time that starred Kristin from ‘Laguna Beach’ called ‘Get This Party Started’ or something like that. You could tell this was a song Mandisa feels passionately about & it was a good performance. Randy said there is no question she can definitely sing & is one of the best. He didn’t like the song choice either. Paula said there is a new religion & 40 million people have joined the church of Mandisa. She would love to see her color it up w/ some vulnerability. Simon thought it was a bit indulgent & he didn’t get it.

Chris also sat down with Ryan. Ryan said that ‘Walk the Line’ was ‘Live’s’ version? Chris said yeah & he loves that band. Chris chose ‘What If’. He said it is probably the heaviest song he has chosen. I f*cking love this song! I made my husband’s band do it. I can’t stand Creed but love this song. & I loved Chris’ version. That was awesome. Randy said he liked the song but wasn’t his favorite choice from him. He thought he was sharp & not his best vocal. But it is representative of the kind of album Chris would make. Paula said what if what if she said she was one of his biggest fans. Simon said for the 1st time he would be negative w/ him. Chris said it would be the 2nd time. Simon said there is a line you don’t cross & Creed wouldn’t be caught dead on this show & he has to start showing another side to himself & can’t keep doing this every week [like Ruben, Fantasia & Carrie got to do.] I don’t give a sh*t what they say. If the prior winners can stay in their comfort zones the whole season, so can Chris. & Simon previously liked that Chris wasn’t compromising so he shouldn’t sell out now. I now the typical AI fan will hate the performance cuz they are more Barry Manilow & that’s fine. Makes the show worthwhile for me to hear a good rock song mixed in with all the lame crap.

Katharine chose ‘The Voice Within’ by Christina Aguilera. I have no idea why. She rambled on & I was still reeling from Chris’ awesome song. What the hell is she wearing? That top was awful. Her vocal was decent. It is risky to do an Xtina song cuz no matter how nasty she is, the girl can sing. Randy said he is one of her biggest fans. He said it is a good choice but she sang it just like the record & didn’t bring anything new to it. Paula said they stress all the time to change it up but she wouldn’t have changed a thing & thought she was at her best. She thinks Christina would feel honored. Simon said it was the best tonight & was almost as good as Christina.

Bucky chose ‘Real good Man’ by Tim McGraw cuz he just wanted to get back to country. One part he was drowned out by the band & I couldn’t tell if he messed up the words. I was bored but I am not a good judge cuz country typically bores me. Randy said this is definitely the right kind of song for him & likes that better. Paula said it is familiar to him but be careful w/ his diction so they can understand him. Simon said for once he agrees w/ Paula & couldn’t understand a single thing he said. He said it is very unimpressive tonight & that was winging it & just ok.

Paris chose Beyonce’s ‘Work it Out’ so she can be young & have fun. I thought she did a great job. This girl is a performer fo sure. Randy said that was fearless, the bomb & she worked it out. He said it was the best performance of the night & she is a hot one. Paula said those were kid moves? She said no one can do it like Beyonce but the Pussycat Dolls should call her up. Simon thought it was precocious & like a little doll pretending to be Beyonce, whoopee.

Elliott closed the show with Gavin DeGraw’s ‘I Don’t Want to Be’ that Bo did last year. I think it is a good choice for him even though Bo owned it last year. I loved his vocal & his enthusiasm. His voice did seem to crack once but it was still good. Randy said he wasn’t quite sure about the arrangement but this boy can sing & we got another hot one. Paula said she loved the arrangement & that he made it his own & is one funky white boy. Simon said great song, terrible arrangement & the dancing was hideous.

So who did I like the most tonight? Need you ask? Chris most definitely. But I know he will make most people’s bottom 3 cuz the AI viewers do not like rock. I think Taylor & Mandisa were at the top as well. My bottom 3 are Lisa, Kellie & Bucky. I think Kellie will be safe first. Not sure who will go out of Bucky & Lisa but it really doesn’t matter what order they go home in.

Ryan said that Shakira will perform on tomorrow’s show. Yuck. That girl is nasty. & I get it. You like to jiggle your belly. Get a new dance move move please.
