Amid the various whining going on about Chris’s supposed rip off of “Walk the Line” I have to come to his defense. By Idolhead Ed
This article is owned by <a href=”http://www.mediafiends.com/”>MediaFiends.com & may not be reproduced without permission.
First off, everyone sings covers on this show. That’s what it is. Chris was fortunate last week that he got a Chili Peppers version of “Higher Ground” to sing. This is how you stay true to who you are. Find a version that fits your style and you. Chris is doing just that. I’m no Rocker fan and wouldn’t likely buy a rocker CD, but my son would and loves Chris, but I totally understand and respect what Chris has been able to do. This is the way it is done.
Now on to the “controversial”, “Walk the Line” cover. No it wasn’t the Johnny Cash version nor should it have been. It was a Live version. Good for Chris for knowing this or maybe even researching and finding this out. And had the editing not been what it was, the rest of America would know that Chris acknowledged this in his intro piece. Chris never said “I arranged this version”. And you could not have been more current with a 50’s song than “Walk the Line”. I will say that if he had done this version on his own it would have been something even more amazing. I, like the rest of the country thought he did do this on his own which I will admit impressed me a lot more but never the less, it was well done save a few rough notes at the beginning. So chill out everybody!
On to some more stuff.
Five different people have visited the bottom 3 the last two weeks. Two people went home after being there just once. One person has been there twice and is still here to sing. That would be Lisa Tucker. I’m going to predict she will give her best performance of the series this week. I will also bet she won’t be in the bottom 3 on Wednesday. Will we have a previous visitor or two in the bottom or will they all be new. If they are all new, which I doubt by the way, we will have only four left who have not been in the bottom 3. I predicted early on that 3 would never see the bottom 3 and I’m sticking by it. I’m ready at this point to say Katharine, Taylor, and Chris will be the ones. Even as tight as the talent is this season, for me it is evident. Of the three I think Taylor is by far the weakest but it won’t matter as much with him because of his rabid, that’s a good rabid, fan base.
Why is not being in the bottom 3 important? Well all you need to do is look at the previous Idols who never saw the bottom 3; Kelly, Clay, and Carrie. What other important thing do these three share in common. Great success. Carrie is just getting started and she is already more successful at this stage than Kelly or Clay was. Other winners and runners-up and on down the line, can not compare with the success of the non bottom three dwellers. So while it is most important to win, it appears it is even more important not to ever be in the bottom three.
Kat has had 5 very good performances; Chris has had 4 as has Taylor. But none of these three has had anywhere close to a bad performance. For that matter at this point only Bucky and Kellie have had what I think was a sub par performances of everyone who is left. Mandisa has been on her game consistently as too has five very good performances but I do not think she will escape the bottom three for very long. Kellie has had four very good and one just didn’t belong. No matter what, the remaining contestants except maybe Bucky, will make careers of what they have done on Idol already. I could very well be wrong about Bucky. I’m just not familiar with the genre he is in.
After watching back all the performances many times, I know I need to get a life, Chris, Mandisa, Kellie, Paris, Elliott, and Katharine all look like they are already doing this for a living . It makes for a much better show when we have as much as we do this season. After only two songs in the top 12, I don’t know how this season will ever be topped. Maybe these who are great now will falter over time. Maybe the pressure will get to them or they will just tire out but I just don’t think so. I don’t think anyone can reasonably argue that there has ever been a better top 12.
Songs from the 21st century. What a weak genre in my opinion. We’ll see if the mighty top 10 can make this genre into anything but mush. If anybody can, this group can.
Is it Tuesday yet? Oh yeah, it is!
