American Idol: AI5: Girls finally show some gumption (thank God)

Abysmal as last week was for the ladies, this week they showed they wanted to be here, dang it. And thank goodness, or the guys wouldn't have had anything to worry about!

Now it's a fight to the finish for the girls. I'm not sure any one of them is absolutely safe with Ayla and Melissa giving it all they've got to be one of those six! What did I think of it all.....

KATHARINE MCPHEE: "All is Fair in Love"
Awe her and Kellie are BFF! I think I just threw up a little in my mouth. I'm developing some problems with Katharine. See, her mom's a vocal coach, and for the most part she's pretty vocally perfect, except for a few stray runs. However, I think the fan base will thin as time goes by. I don't have my mind totally around it yet, but I just can't see her winning. She's just not Kelly for me, not that I want a carbon copy....I guess I mean she's just not special/spectacular.

That said, the song began very composed, pretty, controlled with not a note oversung. There was quite an odd run in the middle, but until then everything was pretty effortless. She belts correctly and all that. Great transitions from head to chest. A nice, soft last note, but I just wasn't WOWED. I think she could have found a better song to sing. There was no punch. She's still safe by a mile, and she made a cute funny face at Simon. 7/10

KINNIK SKY: "I'm Here for the Party"
Kinnik let loose, which is exactly what she needed to do after a stale, overly poised performance last week. The whole thing felt a bit flat to me, but she made a vocally eh song exciting with some nifty runs. I liked the nice raspy high note and the last run was decent. I got a Kimberly Caldwell/Vonzell vibe, if that makes any sense. There was great energy to her performance, but I'm not totally sold on the vocals yet. (Simon would smile if Paula fell off a roller coaster, which for some reason I actually found funny) 7/10

LISA: (cute shirt combo and she did Lion King, good for her) "When I had You"
Lisa manages to come off completely sincere and sweet, but not annoying at all times. That my friends is a quality that cannot be taught! She had a bit of a weak start, but she started grooving in the middle and was homefree in the end. She nailed the dramatic ending without it being overly cheesy. She had more of a connection to the song and the audience than Katharine did. She is a genuine person and performer. I still think her voice is a little thin. 7.5/10

    MELISSA: "WHY HAVEN'T I"
Damn Carrie for making country music so okay to sing on Idol, and praise Bo for making classic rock okay. That said, Melissa came out rocking, which she needed to do. Last week she did pretty okay on her ballad, she definitely sings from her heart. But what she needed was a really solid vocal. We got an awesomely solid vocal! This girl might be the dark horse of the girls, easing in to steal a spot. She really wants this, and she gives a flirty, sexy, fun performance! Simon's an idiot for thinking this wasn't perfect for her range.
    8/10

    HEATHER COX: "Hero"
SHe's right, this song has never been done, and really probably for good reason. Kelly can sing Mariah......for that matter Tamyra, Latoya, Jennifer, and Vonzell can all handle Mariah. Heather is so out of her depth it's insane. I feel like I'm watching a beauty pageant. And really, 2nd ballad in a row? Gimme a break. She has no idea what works for her voice and what doesn't. I wasn't wild about the key change, and it was completely karaoke until the held note. I still can't tell how I feel about that held note....mostly because my friend was talking loudly over it. Paula gave a perfect assessment. 5/10

    BRENNA: "Last Dance"
I can't help but comment that this was Ryan Starr's, "Last Dance" on Idol as well, and I really hope it is Brenna's. I just plain am not a fan of her voice or her personality. She told an awkward joke before her performance, and she's obnoxious. SHe's pitchy, there's tension in her throat, sometime its a bit nasal, and she isn't belting correctly. Just okay.... 4/10

    PARIS: "Wind Beneath my Wings"
Bad ballad choice city this year with the ladies. Singing untouchable ballads should not be on their list of things to do. Paris sang it note for note exactly like Bette, except for a single moment pause in the middle. That's it, the rest was entirely karoke. If you are going to do a song like this, be creative and attempt to make it your own. There were a couple of magic notes in there, but some of the top notes felt shouted to me. Better than Hero, but not spectacular. 6.5/10

    AYLA: celine
Wow, Bette, Celine, and Mariah all in one night. Ayla has a great start on this song, which I don't like at all, but that's not the point. Ayla knows her voice and what she can do with it. She has great transistions throughout, puts her whole heart into it and lets it all go. She has a great power note at the end into her head voice that was really excellent. She carried a difficult song and there were only a couple of iffy moments. She could have ended up Heather except for one key element, Ayla is good. 8/10

    KELLIE: "Let's give em somethin'"
I loved her spinach salad, calamari thing. But is it enough to keep her in the competition? Probably. She has a great start on our third country song of the night. At least, I like this one. It's a cute, flirty performance and she really starts rocking out. Her low notes are a bit rough and the top note a little screamy, but it was much better than last week. This really isn't that difficult of a song, so I'm still a little skeptical about Hard Knock Carrie. She's safe though. 7/10

MANDISA: I missed her performance! I know, it's terrible. But from what I've read she sang her heart out on the 4th country song of the night.

I think Heather and Brenna are heading home! Kinnik might take one of their spots, but I'd like to see what else she has to offer.
