I’m not sure what happened to the American Juniors but they did do a disappearing act and I would have to think it was not voluntary. There were many talented singers in this group, and I mean all 20 that competed for the group of 5. And from the looks of things the ones who didn’t make it may very well being doing the best. I have not seen hide nor hair of Lucy, Danielle, Chauncey, Tori, or Taylor. I’m not too up to speed on these little ones but I hope they all try to do what Katelyn has done.
I accidentally found out about Katelyn’s CD from a
friend who had told me to listen to a song on Julie
Debela’s website. After listening I thought it would
be interesting to see if I could find out what’s
happening with the others on the show. I was surprised but happy when I saw Jordan McCoy’s site with her single. I always thought she was nothing but a bundle of talent wrapped up in this tiny little girl and I’m glad to report that I was right. She is even more beautiful and her voice has matured immensely. Julie Debela as well has not stopped her pursuit of a musical career and we will all be hearing from her soon I’m sure. But this is not about them, it is about what Katelyn has accomplished in the face of defeat or so was perceived at the time.
First off, the artwork is far better than any American Idol/Canadian Idol CD ever. It is pure beauty. The photography of Katelyn on the CD case as well as the CD itself are impeccable and as beautiful as Katelyn herself. You know. She was that contestant that got accused of being beautiful all the time. (Accurate accusation by the way.) But on the show she also was out sang every night, except once, by Danielle and Lucy. It just so happened the night she sang her best, so did Danielle. Danielle gave the performance of her
life and made it into the group while Katelyn was left out. In my opinion, the best group would have been Lucy, Danielle, Chantel, Jordan, and Katelyn. This group would have been much more marketable. We could be talking about the cute girl vote here.
The CD “Wonderful, Crazy.”
1. “Undeniable”
What a great song and Katelyn sounds very good. The first 5 seconds of the song don’t really fit the rest of this song. It sounds like it’s going to be a Disco song but is anything but. Not what I remember from the show at all. The melody is great and catchy. The hook is so good it sounded like I should have heard it before. It’s fun to hear her harmonize with herself. One of my favorites on the CD. Actually my second favorite. Grade A
2. “Rain” another good song. Where in the world did you get these songwriters? American Idol needs to hire them. These songs are age appropriate sort of. Although I don’t know how much love someone 15 should have experienced. Katelyn does another bang up job. This reminds me a bit of an A-Teen song. I love the A-Teens by the way. This song is very well arranged. The little bits of acoustic guitar are a great touch. Another “A” from me.
3. “Something In Me”
Not one of my favorites on the CD but still pretty
good. Katelyn does not shine as much here. This is a song someone older would sing it would be more appropriate. Katelyn’s lower register is a bit weak here. It’s funny because the same lower register was fine on the first two songs. Grade C+
4. “Wonderful Crazy”
A very age appropriate and fantastic song. So good in fact I put this on repeat in my car when it comes on. Katelyn really shines one this “Wonderful, Crazy” song. I can see Katelyn doing a video with this and becoming the next teen star. A wonderful melody and the catchiest hook I’ve heard since …..well, I don’t know when. Disney or Nickelodeon needs to jump on this. You guessed it, this is my favorite. And its grade; what else “A+”.
5. “I’ll Make It Real”
A very lilty song and quite pleasant to listen to. No
flaws in Katelyn’s voice here. Not one of my favorites but I’ll bet a lot of young girls will like it. Grade C
6. “Closer t My Heart”
What!? Another good song? What’s going on here? A very good song for Katelyn’s range and tone and she’s perfect on it. Another song the young girls will like. Oh and 50 year old writers too. Grade A
7. “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize”
I don’t know how age appropriate this song is but I
can bet it is true to life. I can see any young guy
that would like to talk to Katelyn be as intimidated
as this song suggests. That being said another great song! American Idol please take down the phone numbers of these writers. Maybe we’ll get a single as good as the Canadian Idol single “Alive”.
Katelyn has really impressed me. Grade A. What can I say?
8. “Life Was”
Katelyn can show off her softer side with this tune. The song itself is a little lacking though. A tad too monotonous for me. Not much range but again not every song can be great. Still not bad. Grade C+
9.”Brand New Day”
A very bouncy tune and suits Katelyn’s age group well. Pretty fun and Katelyn’s sounds like she enjoys doing this song. Fun . Grade B
10. “Everything”
Another bouncy song. Not too melodic. Good arrangement makes this song better than it should be. That’s a good thing. Katelyn does handle this song very well. It almost sounds like it could be the theme song for her TV show if she had one. And you know what? She should probably get one. Grade B-
All in all this a very good freshman CD. If I had to
compare this CD to all of the other Idol CDs, which I
must, because these are really her contemporaries, here’s what I would say. This album is better than almost all of them considering there couldn’t have been near as much money put into it. And without question it was miles and miles better than the American Juniors CD and I love all those kids.
Katelyn should be very proud as well as Kenny Tarver for putting this together. I wish that more music like this were being put out and on the radio instead of the third rate tripe that is. Now let’s just hope I’m not the only one who has gotten a whiff of this great CD. Here’s hoping the folks at Disney and Nick take note. Overall, this 50 year old fogey gives “Wonderful Crazy” a wonderful A-. I hope we see you on TV again soon Katelyn.
