Many were happy with the results of both shows. Many weren’t. But I think it’s safe to say most everyone enjoyed them both………….in record numbers I might add. By Idolhead Ed
This article is owned by <a href=”http://www.mediafiends.com/”>MediaFiends.com & may not be reproduced without permission.
On March 25th this year, James Shepherd, Editor of Beavers on Idol, wrote a column entitled “How success can destroy an Idol competition”. The premise of his article was that once a real Pop Idol was found it would be the end of Idol as a force on the tube and in the record stores. Pointing out that Will Young, Garath Gates and Darius Danish have been so successful that there’s no reason to move on with Pop Idol. He also made the case that the finding of Kalan Porter on Canadian Idol 2 Killed Canadian Idol. American Idol has been allegedly killed by ………Clay Aiken. Well I hope James watched Canadian Idol 3 as closely as he portended he would this year. If he did I think it may have changed his mind. I didn’t think he was correct in his assumptions then but now……Well, I still don’t. For the same reason every baseball, football or hockey season brings us an eventual winner, we don’t stop watching the next year because that was the best team and that’s that. American and Canadian Idol are much more about the journey than the destination. There were no better examples that this season of both American Idol and even more so, Canadian Idol. Unfortunately, the Americans who read this will have to live vicariously through my words as they are not able to see Canadian Idol, save a few of us. But I will give you a few ways to see a little of it at the end of my article. On with the tale of two seasons.
Let me start with AI4. The journey starts out with the obligatory auditions. 30,000,000 tune in to see the lousy singers then it calms down to around 20,000,000 to watch the real singers. Part of the journey is to pick out your favorites before the competition even starts. Last year one of my favorites bailed before the competition really started; Marlea Stroman. (I hope she comes back this year.) Part of the interesting journey I’m talking about.
Carrie Underwood was pegged by many to win from the early stages of the competition. Yeah, I was one of them. But it looked like a very strong field of competitors this year. We had music teacher Anwar, who could sing unbelievably. We had our first Hispanic contender Mario, who was favored by many to win. But what? He drops out after making the top 12. Unheard of. This is another part of the interesting journey. Anwar, one of the top contenders fell apart when he got to the top 12. This year there were two rockers in the top 12 in Constantine and Bo. There were two former Star Search contestants in the top 12 in Nadia and Jessica. Jessica actually was cut from AI last season but didn’t give up and made it to the top 10. Yeah, that magic cut off number to go on tour and pick up a $60,000 paycheck for your efforts.
I don’t want to recap the whole season but you can see where I’m going. Some contestants got better and left. Some got worse and hung around. (No pun intended on that HUNG part) When it got down the final 3, another part of the amazing journey took place. Bo Bice sang one of his three songs a capella. Astounding all. Many picked him to win after this. But alas, Carrie came out the victor. Our journey was complete and capped off with inarguably the best finale show in history. Quite possibly the best musical variety type show ever. Now we are at the destination. Will Carrie sell more CDs than any idol winner? I do believe she will. I actually think Carrie will sell more than the venerable Clay Aiken. I actually can’t wait for both of their CDs to come out.
Now on to the journey of most enjoyment that CI3 took us on.
Canadian Idol 3 starts out with the obligatory auditions. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, the bad people aren’t near as bad as their American Idol counterparts. For me, that’s a fortunately. A side note; Canadian Idol rejects aren’t even remotely rude or whiney like the AI rejects are. Either that or the editing is better.
The producers do their usual focusing on the folks they think will contend and they get plenty of face time. This is where the CI journey is the most interesting this season. We had two rockers this year on CI; Suzi and Rex. We had 6 teens in the top 10 ranging in age from 16 to 19. Under normal circumstances this would spell doom for a show like this. These were not normal circumstances. We had a shoe-in Cuban, Dianelys, who ended up not being a shoe-in. This girl could sing. (She should defect to the US and try out for AI. Just kidding about that defect thing.) We had all 4 judges give a standing ovation to Amber for her stunning version of “You Can’t Make Me Love You” or “I Can’t Make You Love Me”.( I can never remember the name of that song. I know it’s somebody can’t make somebody love somebody). Anyway, everyone who made it to the top 10 was no surprise except one. A 16 year old female from Calgary, Melissa O’Neil. Like Latoya from AI3, she, with no memorable face time, got the most votes in her group of 8 performance. And should’ve because she sang the best. This is where the CI journey really began but we had no idea at the time.
The first night of top 10 performances was composed of 8 ok performances and two exceptional ones. One of the exceptional ones Melissa, landed in the bottom 3 the following night with two other young teens. She was the first back to the couch and didn’t seem phased at all. She got up the next week and sang like she was supposed to win. No sign of having been in the bottom 3 the previous week. What a champ!
Top 9 night, two of the three best performances ended up in the bottom 3. Yes, that ye of little face time, Melissa was standing on the seal again, along with, for my money, one of the three best in this competition, 18 year old Ashley Leitao. A 22 year old, Josh, was the 3rd one on the floor. Now here’s a thoery I have heard many times before but I have never believed until now. Josh was sent back to the couch leaving two of the best in the competition still on the chopping block. Ashley was so good the week before that she was as Sass put it “Too perfect”. I think because of this, we got a real blessing in disguise although at the time it surely didn’t seem that way. I think enough viewers assumed plenty of people would vote for Ashley. They either didn’t vote or spent their votes on someone else in the competition they wanted to help. And before we knew it, Ashley was going home. Melissa is safe by the skin of her teeth. At that moment, nobody realized how important this result would turn out to be. This was the only time this 16 year old showed any signs of nerves
Week after week, 16 year old Melissa O'Neil, with the intestinal fortitude of someone ten years her senior, outperformed and out gutted everyone else….and it seemed effortless. It was becoming obvious that Canada was about to get its first female Idol. At one point in the competition, Melissa’s odds of winning were placed at 92/1. Bet a dollar, win 92. This kind of a leap is unprecedented.
Top 7 night gave us the best Canadian Idol show I’ve ever seen with Big Band night. Melissa put on a Kelly Clarkson like performance with “Delovley” and sealed the deal with me. But really, everyone did well. It was followed up by the best results show I have ever seen. This journey just got better and better.
Needless to say, Melissa did become the first female Canadian Idol. It is my humble opinion that she will do better than the highly touted Kalan. If you in America want to fall in love with the most loveable Idol EVER, go to www.idol.ctv.ca and watch the videos of Melissa on the latest clips section. If you have DSL make sure you click High Speed or the picture will not be very good. You will hear a little of Melissa’s single “Alive”, the best Idol single ever by far. This is inarguable. A word of warning; you will want to jump through your monitor and give her a big hug. I’ve torn my monitor up already.
What a great journey we get to go on every season. You see, Idol is more about the journey than the destination. And for this reason, American and Canadian Idol will be around for a long time. And I for one am happy about it. Well I guess Melissa O’Neil killed Canadian Idol for me. But you know what? I can’t wait to see who kills it for me it next year. What about you James?
