Melissa wins Canadian Idol, but the fans win with the night. By Idolhead Ed

Trying to out Idol American Idol, Canadian Idol put on quite a show. A great one in fact. Full of talent, tears, joy and proud papas. While not quite as good as AI4’s finale, (No $60 million budget) it certainly was better than any other Idol finale AI or CI…..by a long shot. Here’s a brief look.
We start off with the top 10 accompanied by a children’s choir. They each sing a snippet of a song and I can’t help but compare this group to the top 10 of last year. I will still argue that this top 10 was the best hands down. The first two to go off, Emily and Ashley were great. I would not say that about last year’s. Each and every one did very well. When Amber chimed in with her part I just couldn’t help thinking…………what if? There is a brilliant voice. Don’t ever tell me song choice doesn’t matter. I’m lovin’ this show so far.
We next here 8 of the top 10 sing a bit of the song they sing on the compilation CD “High Notes”. Each one great again although Emily’s pageant singing shows up this time. But the voice is spot on. I’m lovin’ this show so far.
Neat we get the mini-retros. I love the retros because here we get to see how Melissa and Rex got to the top 2. As a tribute to all the Idols for “giving it a shot” Sass sings a great rendition of “All is fair In Love”. Sass can sing and she tears this up. The last note was off the hook. I don’t think Paula could take her on. Yep, I’m lovin’ this show so far.
Now we get the opportunity to hear Debra Byrd, the voice coach for AI and CI sing “I Know I’ll Never Love This Way Again”. As she sings she faces the contestants as to tell them this song is for them. This performance was magnificent! The camera spots Melissa in the audience and tears are running down her cheeks. By the time Byrd finishes with her glory note, Melissa is not the only one with wet cheeks. As the Idols join her on stage they sing “Dedicated to the One I Love”, brilliantly I might add, to her. It appears that it was a surprise because Byrd started choking up. I’ll admit, so did the Idolhead. Oh Yeah! I’m lovin’ this show so far.
After Kalan sings we get a very touching tribute to the top 10 parents. You’ve never seen a more proud bunch of people. Could Melissa’s father be any more proud? I don’t think so. Yeah, that choked up the Idolhead too. Actually, I’d get choked up over my son if he would just remember to lift the toilet seat before he went. I’ll have to say, I’m lovin’ this show so far.
The top 10 sing a tribute to all of the folks that made the show happen this Summer with “The Time Of Your Life” It sounded fantastic until a few of the microphones quit working. Poor Emily and Ashley. It had to be embarrassing for them. Live TV; don’t you love it? I don't love that but I’m lovin’ this show so far.
We now get to see the entire retro on Melissa. It great to see her audition and the part where she messed up in the top 100. And all this time I had the impression she was perfect. Oh the shattered thoughts. Mel then sings “DeLovely”. Save one cracked note she does brilliantly again. This girl is a star. And later on in the show she solidifies that statement. To make this even more impressive, Melissa has only been singing for 2 years. I’m really lovin’ this show so far!
Rex’s retro is next and since I remember most of this it’s not quite as interesting. Rex reprises his Standards night joint “Feelin’ Good”. Not quite as good as his original but not too bad.
Next up, the signature part of the night for Rex and Melissa. They sing a duet of “Against all Odds”. Never liked this song and it is on of those “Idol sung to death songs” We actually heard it two times this year on AI4. Both were pretty good renditions. But nothing compared to what we were about to witness. Rex started out pretty well but without even singing, Melissa stole the song. How in the world can someone 17 years old do what she does? How can someone 20? I see Hollywood in Mel’s future as well. As if that weren’t amazing enough, then she began to sing. Oh my aching back! This is what I was talking about 2 paragraphs back. As the two were singing, the camera panned the audience and Suzi and Casey were the waterworks. This was absolutely brilliant! While Rex held his end up, Melissa held the whole stage up. I’m freaking lovin’ this show now.
It’s now time to announce our next Canadian Idol. And it is……Melissa O’Neil! Melissa’s reaction to winning was the absolute best ever on any Idol show period. She was manic, classy, funny and totally enjoyable all at once. Melissa takes us out singing the new single “Alive” and she really brings it ALIVE. Un….Be…Leive…able! Melissa is a star……… now! She sang that song like a real pro. I can’t wait to buy it. Move over Kelly Clarkson. I couldn’t be happier for her, but I’m even happier for Canada. Melissa is the real deal and you have scored a real prize in her. I just hope she makes it to the US. It would be pretty smart of American Idol to have her on next season as a guest singer. Congratulations Melissa. You really deserve it and I know you will be a great Canadian Idol. And in case you didn’t know, I loved this show.
