I’ll have to say, I am surprised by the events of the night. Pleased as well. Read on and see why. By Idolhead Ed

Unfortunately, the Idolhead was not able to get seats at the Bassett tonight but the seat I did have, was perfect. Melissa didn’t surprise at how well she did. On the other hand, Rex certainly did. With each singing three songs, it would be impossible to hide any short comings. Let’s see how they did.
First up (by coin flip I might add) Melissa singing the judges choice “Angel in the Morning”. Melissa did the song justice and sounded her usual good self. She was a little inaudible on the lower register in the beginning but picked it up. I would rather had heard a different song but she did almost everything right. Her tone and pitch were spot on. She emoted well. Did not seem the least bit nervous. The only critique I have is she should have blown out the chorus. It’s as if she is timid about really going for it. Still the best performance of the night so far. (Cough! Cough! )
Rex up 2nd with the new single “Alive” I love this song. And boy was I surprised by Rex’s performance. This was really good. The best He has ever done. I was thinking “Who is this guy?” This wasn’t the same Rex I heard murder songs week after week. This was actually worth listening to again. He did everything right. He sang it ALL in tune and busted some moves up on the stage. As Melissa, Rex didn’t seem to have the nerves I thought he would have. At this point I would have to say Rex was in the lead. What did I just say? Huh?
Melissa’s 2nd song was her choice “Broken Wing”. This song was sung the last two seasons on American Idol. Most recently by Jessica Sierra. Her performance elicited the comment from Simon. “That was the best female vocal to this point this season”. And most notably by my favorite American Idol, Diana Degarmo. As much as I like those 2 singers and performances, Melissa’s toped them both on different levels. Melissa was able to sing so on pitch and clean. (Diana did have a bit of a problem here) Mel also did this with such ease it was sick. No sign of strain or effort. (This is where Jessica had a problem). I would buy this record from Melissa. She is there. Man I wish I was.
Rex’s 2nd effort was his choice “Bullittproof” and that’s what this performance was. Who is this guy? Wha..? Man! I thought this was going to be a disaster. It was anything but. The thought of Rex singing a song in the lower register as this one is, was enough to give me the willies. He pulled it off magnificently. Whoa! I have to go back and listen again to make sure I heard things right. Every note on pitch and sung with the right intensity. Gezz Rex! What are you trying to do, win this thing! Very impressive.
Meliss’a last song of the night was the single “Alive”. Oh My! This was other worldly! She was audible enough on the front end low parts so I figured she would rock the middle to end. And oh did she ever! When Mel hit the chorus I really got a chill. It was Awesome with a capital A. You see that capital A there don’t you? The tone and power! It was incredible. It is hard to say this is the best I have ever heard her sing because she is always so good. Always. But she did save the very best for last. This was spectacular. It reminds me of when Clay sang “Bridge …”on final night AI2. I liked this song when Rex sang it. I absolutely fell in love with it when Melissa sang it. This was a championship performance.
Rex’s last song of the night was the judge’s choice “Superman” This performance was more in line with the Rex I had gotten to know and criticize. While it wasn’t his weakest of the season, it was easily the weakest of the night. He was back to himself being off key in more than a few places. The lower register here didn’t happen. Unlike his first song of the night, this was just unhandleable for him. Is that a word? Rex did not look comfortable on this one.
As I said in my earlier piece “Who Will Win and Why” it may very well not come down to the singing tonight much at all. If it did, this would be a tighter race because of Rex, not Melissa. Melissa did what she does every night. Rex did something I didn’t think he was capable of. Rex would have won the first round tied the second and really lost the 3rd. Since it will be more dependant on fan base, I still have to give it to Melissa. If I had to give it to the singing champ she would also get my vote. They are both fortunate to have such a good song for the single. This song would be a hit even if the Idolhead were to record it. Both versions were very good and very different. No matter who wins the title, this single will be the real winner.
Who will win? I’m sticking to my prediction of Melissa O’Neil. It’s hard to figure out why Rex was so much better tonight than he has ever been before. I’m thinking it’s because in contrast to what we are use to from him, it magnifies his performance by a factor of 10. Even at that, I still don’t think it will put him over the top. I’ll leave you with these words of wisdom straight from the mouth of Zack tonight; “First season we had a waiter boy. Second season we had a little prince. Come Thursday it’s going to say “The king is dead, long live the queen””.
