The big night is this Wednesday. Who will it be? I think I know…….and I think you do too.

Melissa and Rex square off Tuesday night to do battle (as much as singing is a battle). I am looking forward to this show immensely, unlike the last few weeks or for that matter, the last few American Idol finals. And it's not because I think it will be a closley fought match. Far from it. There should be three good, if not great, song choices. Rex will be given something he can handle by the judges most certainly. The song I think will give him the most trouble will be the single. I’ll take bets on that from anyone. So Rex should do well on two songs. I stress, should.

Melissa will get something from the judges that will challenge her a bit. And why? Because she can handle it. Melissa will also pick a song she is familiar with and comfortable for her choice. I’m thinking “Concrete Angel” here. And the new single “Alive”, she will nail. Just like every week of this top 10, Melissa will not stumble. She will not pull a Diana DeGarmo on finals night and go off key. But the fact is, it almost doesn’t matter who does the best. It is virtually pure fan base now and Melissa hasn’t seen the pit since week two of the top 10, and that’s no mistake. Melissa’s rise on the show reminds me of how Kelly snuck in under the radar for a while. Although Melissa did spend the first two weeks in the bottom 3, she has easily avoided it since. She has done it with outstanding vocals. She has done it with great performances. She has done it against what most thought were the insurmountable fan bases of Rex and Suzi. She has done it at 17. Yeah Farley, I have to remind myself every time I hear her.

Rex will stiffen it up and may sing OK. But I’m betting his nerves will be on display bigger than ever on Tuesday. He looked more nervous last week than I ever remember. If Melissa is nervous I doubt we will know it. She has a way to hide it, like Farley says. If it really does get down to singing, Rex is no match. Just ask him. If it gets down to other worldly things, who knows. But I’m betting the voters who don’t know who they are voting for already (who are few and far between) will need to be swayed by the vocals. Here's the catch. Rex could sing his worst and still win. He could sing his best and not win. I’m going to go down the middle on this one and say, he won’t sing his worst or best or win.

I went back and watched all of Melissa’s and Rex’s performances. A funny thing happened. Now understanding how good Melissa is, looking back at her performances she is even better. Doing the same for Rex, the exact opposite happened. I remember my first impression of Rex in his original audition I stated “He shouted his way through the song and I don’t see him making the first cut”. Well, I was wrong, or at least half wrong. He did make it. He still shouted the song and hasn’t stopped shouting the songs since.

I also went back and searched for footage of Melissa in the audition rounds, I was surprised to actually find some. Not much singing though. I can see why she didn’t stick in my mind. Now I can’t get her out of it.

For whatever reason the odds makers still have Rex as an almost 2/1 favorite to win. Many of the pundits agree. I'll take this time to remind everyone that the odds makers had Bo favored to win as almost every internet poll and every internet writer did. There was this one internet writer who said Carrie would prevail. He wrote this article.

Melissa will win Canadian Idol 3. She will also do Canadian Idol, and even more important, Canada and me proud.
