The "Favorites" Tanked, But Will The Others Benefit? By DaHouster

As we return to the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles, J.D. is grilled, Suzie is a gorgeous basket case, and Dave Navarro is lobbing softball questions to Marty.
Brooke Burke must have bought Imelda Marcos's shoe closet.
And then there was singing.
When I finish writing this, I'm going to be voting for Suzie McNeil. I think I might just pay to watch her, never mind her great voice. My only knock on her was that she was a teeny tiny tad soft in spots, but I think her rendition of the Stones' "Start Me Up" might just get Mick Jagger to take a day off from the Stones' great tour so he can have a roll in the smoggy hay with Suzie. Or in the mosh pit. As the Everly Brothers sang in "Wake Up, Little Suzie", "Ooh La La!"
If Suzie is in the bottom three, Dave Navarro might just slit his throat, or, in the alternative, get out a guitar and play "Otherside" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Foreigner. What a great group. Never mind the sappy ballads like "Waiting For A Girl Like You" and "I Want To Know What Love Is". There's "Feels Like The First Time", "Double Vision", "Blue Morning", "Head Games", Long Long Way From Home" and a lot of other sensational songs. One of them is "Cold As Ice."
Unfortunately, while J.D. Fortune was good, his midrange near-baritone voice did not emulate Lou Gramm well enough.
I personally believe that unless INXS wants to go in a more punk direction, J.D. is just so unlike Michael Hutchence that he is "just not roit for our bahnd, INXS." To me, he sounded like a combination of David Bowie and Right Said Fred ("I'm Too Sexy For My Shirt") trying to cover Lou Gramm and Mick Jones. Sure, J.D. is a prolific songwriter and arranger, but does INXS want a more modern, harder, darker sound to its pop/rock tunes?
Deanna Johnston was in real trouble last week, and may still be in trouble based on the early voting. But if there is justice, Deanna will last a little longer because her original song, "My Truth", and the way she sang and performed it, was just sensational. Although I think it may have come right out of the Courtney Love playbook (or maybe even Liz Phair), I think it was Deanna's best performance of the competition. Give a thumbs up to Ty Taylor for co-writing it. Much, much better than "Stop/Go." I disagree with Jon Farriss who said the song was in Deanna's "Safety Zone." Sounds like a setup for a fall.
Next, for a complete change of pace, Tina Turner comes out with a shaved head and a Mohawk, with Jordis, Deanna and Suzie doing a great job as backup vocalists. Tina sings the Ike and Tina Turner version of "Proud Mary", and eschews the Brooklyn accent folk-rock version originally done by Creedence Clearwater Revival. They could change their name to Gladys Knight and the Pippettes.
OH, that was Ty Taylor! Could have fooled me. It was an excellent performance. Although I missed the low notes originally sung by Ike Turner and years later covered on American Idol 2 by the H.P. Lovecraft monster Tsathoggua singing backup for Trenyce. And paradoxically, the doo doo parts were a bit low. Dave Navarro spoke to Ryan Seacrest backstage, who told him to use the word "Ty-riffic." Or else Dave consulted the editor of the New York Post. Andrew Farriss may have foreshadowed something by calling his performance "a show." I'm not sure INXS wants a show performer (although Mig Ayesa was in the play "We Are The Champions" in London featuring the music of Queen before trying out for this show).
I thing Ty made a fatal error by saying he "wants to show as much soul as possible." The show is called "Rockstar:INXS". Ty should have tried out for American Idol -- and I believe he could have had a shot at winning it. But being too soulful could quickly make Ty "not roit for our bahnd, INXS."
"And I Wonder" (tm Foo Fighters' "Everlong") what would have happened if Ty took "Dream On" and Jordis took "Proud Mary."
You should know that a poster on another site claims that he or shemade it to the Top 50 of Rockstar: INXS, and also claims that Mig Ayesa is a plant who was put in without auditioning, that he was pulled out of the play "We Are The Champions" and that INXS has pre-selected him as the winner.
I choose not to believe that claim.
However, Mig's original song, "Do Or Die" sounds like an INXS song. I totally disagree with Tim Farriss on that score, although I also think the song has a vibe like Collective Soul, so maybe Tim heard something he didn't like. Wearing Horrible Hat No. 2 in the intro clips, Mig does a really good but not superlative job and actually rocked a little. I still think he should have to sing Metallica's "Enter Sandman" or even "Scars" by Papa Roach.
I doubt if Mig will make Dave Navarro cry again, although the Baby Jesus is a possibility.
In the mid 1990's, I wasn't into the "grunge" movement that much (I discovered them years after the genre diminished), but that huge album by the group Live out of York, Pennsylvania was just fantastic. Too bad that song by Live a few years back called "Heaven" (I think) couldn't do well on the pop or rock charts. Songs like "Selling The Drama", "All Over You", and the great storyline of "Lightning Crashes" make the rock songs on the album timeless.
Another great song off that album sung by its lead singer, Ed Kowalczyk, was "I Alone." From what I understand, Kowalczyk doesn't always wear a lot of clothing in concert, so maybe that's why Marty Casey covered the song in bare feet with nail polish. Or maybe Marty thinks he's the second coming of Marilyn Manson. If that's what he thinks, then surely Marty is "not roit for our bahnd, INXS." Because that was a mainly off-key, grunge-like performance. He still has that Tim Curry-like annoying fake British accent (Live is from Pennsylvania, not belabor the point), he screamed the song a little too much, as Jon Farriss noted, and did a stoic rock pointy pose at the end. It occurred to me that Marty sounds a little like Bela Lugosi, who played Count Dracula in the movies.
Rumors abound that Marty is in this not to win, but to get lots of publicity and a recording contract for his Chicago band, "The Lovehammers." We'll see what happens.
In fairness to Jordis Unga, who I still think is a fantastic singer, Aerosmith's "Dream On" is a really, really hard song to sing, bith physically and emotionally. I can't hit that super high note either, and I don't know if Steven Tyler could do it today.
Otherwise, obviously this was below par for Jordis, with an off-key start. Jordis gave it everything she got, and the band was indeed awesome on that song. I think Dave had a decent point as to why Jordis didn't try to switch up the song like "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" last week.
It is possible that the show may try to get some "watercooler buzz" by INXS shockingly eliminating Jordis if she lands in the bottom three.
I'm also wondering why Jordis doesn't seem to get a female rock song -- something like "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina And The Waves or "We Got The Beat" by the Go-Gos.
Its entirely possible that Mig, Marty and Jordis could be in the bottom three, although Deanna appears to be not that popular. After about 30 minutes of (Presidential) debate over the performances tomorrow, SOMEONE (probably Deanna despite her fantastic performance) is being eliminated.
