We now have our new American Idol, but that’s just part of the story. Let’s look at what it took to get here and how much fun it has been. By Idolhead Ed & Juliet79

Every season has its own distinct personality, not that one is better than the other, just different. This season was certainly different by far from the others. Who would have thought that a rocker and a Country singer would be in the finals? Or for that matter, have 4 distinctly different type singers in the top 4. We are going to do our list of American Idol 4 the good the bad and the fantastic.
Best and worst performance by each top 12 contestant.
(In order of exit)
LINDSEY CARDINALE: Although Lindsey was the first to go, because of this year’s format, we got to hear her sing 4 songs.
He Said: Best – “I Try To Think of Elvis”. I actually liked this but it did nothing to show off her voice. Worst – “Knock on Wood” Of all the contestants this year, I think Lindsey was the weakest at picking songs, and that’s saying a lot.
She Said: Best – “I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing” was a great song on Lindsey’s voice and I thought she gave a convincing and quality performance. Worst – Lindsey’s rendition of “Standing Right Next To Me” was totally boring, like a weak version of Julia DeMato.
MIKALAH GORDON:
He Said: Best – This is a no brainer “God Bless the Child” Easily her best and one of the season’s best. Worst – “Young Hearts, Run Free” This was her first song and honestly I thought it was going to be her last.
She Said: Best – I’m with Ed; Mikalah’s best performance was undoubtedly “God Bless the Child”. Worst – “Son of a Preacher Man”. Her grating tone was in full-force, and besides that she was way off-tempo. Yikes.
JESSICA SIERRA
He Said: Best: “Total Eclipse of the Heart” I saw her going a long way after this. Worst: Jessica never really strayed from good, but my least favorite was “The Boys Are Back in Town”.
She Said: Best – Hands-down, it was “Total Eclipse of the Heart”. Why this flawless performance didn’t keep Jessica on the show for several more weeks is beyond me. Worst – Jessica’s lack of range really showed on “Broken Wing”
NIKKO SMITH
He Said: Best: “Incomplete” After he sang this, I thought he would be here for quite a while. Worst: “One Hand, One Heart” Ugh!
She Said: I’m with Ed on both counts.
NADIA TURNER
He Said: Best: “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”. This was singing. Worst: “Time After Time” sent her to the bottom 3 for the first time.
She Said: Once again, I think Ed called it exactly right.
ANWAR ROBINSON
He Said: Best: Another no-brainer “What a Wonderful World” I thought after this he was this year’s winner. Oh how things change. Worst; “I Believe I Can Fly” I believe he almost flew out of the competition after this one.
She Said: Best: “What a Wonderful World” was a really good performance for Anwar. Worst – “A House is Not A Home”.
CONSTANTINE MAROULIS
He Said: Best: “Bohemian Rhapsody” Got an “Astonishing!” out of Simon with this. Worst: “How You Remind Me”. This one put him in the bottom 3 for the first and last time.
She Said: Best – Constantine’s memorable performance of “I Think I Love You” showed he didn’t take himself too seriously; I think actually this was the only one of Constantine’s performances that I liked at all. Worst – just about all his other performances. If I have to pick just one, I’ll say “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”… I thought this performance was creepy and vocally week.
SCOTT SAVOL
He Said: Best: “On Broadway” I thought this might keep him in another week. Worst: “Impossible Dream” Impossible for him to sing.
She Said: Best: “Dance With My Father”. Scott sounded almost exactly like the original version… which for him, was a very good thing indeed. Worst: “Impossible Dream” – Yikes, this is a painful memory. Scott’s vocals re-named this song “To Reach the Unreachable Note”.
ANTHONY FEDEROV
He Said: Best: “I’ve Got You” I saw him going to the top 4 on this one. Worst: “Climb Every Mountain” I saw him going home after this. Sounded like he fell off the mountain.
She Said: Best: It’s tie for me between “Incomplete” and “If You Don’t Know Me by Now”; these were both stellar Anthony moments! Worst: “Climb Every Mountain” This song choice couldn’t have been worse and it just bombed in every way.
VONZELL SOLOMON
He Said: Best: (in competition) “Treat Me Nice” I just loved this. Every note in tune and I like Randy had never heard this and she made me love it. One of my top 10 of the year. But tome her very best and one of the all time Idol best was her duo with Billy Preston. Unbeliveable! She looked like the star of the show. Worst: “How do I Live” Almost killed her.
She Said: Best – After a terrible first performance on Top 4 night, Vonzell came back swinging with a great performance of “Don’t Leave Me This Way”. Worst: Also on top 4 night “How Do I Live Without You”.
BO BICE:
He Said: Best: “Whipping Post” One of my top 3 or 4 of the year. Worst: “Corner of the Sky” Where did this come from?
She Said: Best: Bo’s “Time In A Bottle” was an absolutely magical performance, and one of my very top favorites from this season. Worst: “Corner of the Sky”.
CARRIE UNDERWOOD
He Said: Best “Crying” for the competiton. But the best; “God Bless the Broken Road” with Rascal Flatts. To me, it was the best ever on Idol. This replaces “The Impossible Dream” as my favorite Idol moment. (The Kelly, Diana, Fantasia, Ruben version. Not the Scott version) Carrie was, for the first time I might add, flawless and pitch perfect. So much so that you could hear Gary, the Rascal Flatts singer that sang with her, miss a note or two. Just Incredible! Worst: “When Will I Be Loved?” If she hadn’t already been, she may have been in trouble after this.
She Said: Best – “Making Love Out of Nothing at All”. Amazing! Worst: “When God-Fearing Women Get the Blues”. Carrie was sick that night and really wasn’t on-top of her game.
Gutsiest move of the season: Bo singing a capella in the round of 3. This is the gutsiest thing in the history of Idol. It may never be topped. If anyone attempts it again, it just won’t work, no matter who it is.
Most surprising contestant:
He Said: Vonzell Solomon. I never would have guessed she would make it to the top 3 and could very well have been in the finals or won it.
She Said: I completely agree. Watching Vonzell turn into a performer to be reckoned with was one of the delights of this season!
Most disappointing contestant:
He said: Anwar Robinson: After
“Wonderful World” he should have been on his way to the title be he floundered like no one ever has before. I still can’t get over that. I can’t figure out what happened to him. He started to come back a little at the end but way too little, way too late.
Favorite change for the show this year.
He Said: The two rounds of 12 replacing the rounds of 8 and the wild card. This was great and I believe this kept some contestants in the top 12 longer than normal. (Anwar/Lindsey/Mikalah to name a few)
She Said: My favorite change was no guest judges! They haven’t added much in the past and I was glad not to have to deal with them this year.
Least favorite change for the show this year
She Said: I really missed having former Idols appear and sing for us on the Wednesday night shows and at the finale.
He Said: I second that!
Best judge’s comment: Simon to Nadia “In a competition full of hamburgers, you are a steak”
Worst comment: Paula to Nadia the same night “You’re in it to win it and your playing the game” HUH!?
Favorite Ford commercial: “Rock This Town” The one that was semi animated where Vonzell spills the food on Constantine.
Least favorite: “One Way or Another” When the final 3 were trying to escape from the press. I liked same theme last year much better with Fantasia, Diana, and Jasmine.
Most surprising exit:
He Said: Constantine Maroulis. Never was in the bottom 3 before.
She Said: I was most surprised by Nadia’s departure… she’d been a consistently strong performer and it was sad to see her leave so early.
Least surprising exit: Everyone else.
Left too early:
He Said: Jessica Sierra. I still think she had one of the most unique voices this year and was always on pitch.
She Said: Nadia Turner, Jessica Sierra, and Lindsey Cardinale.
Left too late:
He Said: I shouldn’t even have to say anything here but I will; Scott Savol. I was beginning to think he was going to win. Not!
She said: In the beginning of the season, Janay Castine left too late. For the rest of the season, it was Scott Savol who needed to go.
Best performance of the season:
He Said: Without even thinking about it Carrie’s “God bless the Broken Road” With Gary of Flatts. I sure hope that is on her CD.
She Said: A toss-up between Carrie’s “Making Love Out of Nothing at All” and Bo’s “Time in a Bottle”.
Worst performance of the season:
He Said: I’d have to say the first time Janay got up to sing had to be it. I don’t know what it was, but then again, I don’t think she did either.
She Said: Whatever Janay Castine sang in the beginning weeks was the absolute worst we heard all season. Mikalah and Scott each turned in a few clunkers as well.
Most sentimental moment:
When Carrie was crying and said and signed I Love You to Anthony and when the girls presented Paula flowers after the week of the Corey debacle.
Final Thoughts:
Was this the best season ever of AI? Well, that depends. It certainly was the most talented. I’m not so sure they all lived up to their potential. I’m still scratching my head over Anwar. And Lindsey’s lack of good song choices. Anthony’s inconsistency and the list goes on. I loved the added band this year but a funny thing happened when they showed up. Not one singer this season sang a pitch perfect song with them. I don’t think that is a coincidence. I believe AI needs to get the sound issues worked out before next season. All in all, I loved this season. It seems that this year, more than ever I was anxious for Tuesdays and Wednesday nights to roll around. Some nights I was disappointed but most nights I walked away with a big smile across my face.
One major change I would like to make if it were up to me I have sort of mentioned before. It would be to make the finale a one night 3 hour show. After the final 3 show the following Tuesday would be a season special recap showing us the good the bad and maybe some stuff we hadn’t seen before. Giving the finalists off till the following Sunday. Time enough to rehearse all the musical ensembles. The show would consistst of the finalists singing 4 songs each; one they pick, one the judges pick, one that Clive picks and their single, singing the full versions of each song. This would take up the first 90 minutes.. The voters would then get 30 minutes to vote. One vote per phone line. The rest of the show would consist of the extras and group songs culminating in the announcement of the winner. By doing it this way it could become an event people would gather at friends’ houses to watch like the Super Bowl.
We’d like to hear your assessments of this season as well. Please post your comments for all to see. This will be my and Juliet’s last AI column of the year. It’s been great fun to hear from you all and even more fun to spill our guts about this season. I can’t wait for next year. But until then I will be getting my Idol fix doing a Canadian Idol review each week so check it out. I know it might not be as interesting if you can’t watch the show but read to see if they can match up to this year’s AI group.
