He said it was so good to be on TES. He has been looking forward to sitting in that chair & is glad it is at the end of the game that he gets to do it. It hasn’t sunk in yet that he won.
His wife is who pushed him to do ‘Survivor’. He was happy to get the chance to play & then to win is just unbelievable. Julie asked if he is the only one to play the game not under the radar & with integrity from beginning to end. Tom doesn’t know but said it wasn’t smart cuz he had a big target on him. But integrity is important to him & he wouldn’t throw it away for the show. He formed real bonds out there & it was all real & he didn’t make any deals that he couldn’t hold to. He said he didn’t outwit but he outlasted.
Tom said his original strategy had been to fly under the radar especially when he saw all the young guys he was up against. He felt like the manager of a Boy Band. But he said it all worked out for him & his original strategy didn’t work. His wife & buddies had told him to be himself & play hard & he followed that advice instead & it worked well for him.
He has watched the other seasons & would always say he could beat that or wouldn’t fall for that. So he wife told him he has to do the show even though he would have to take off work & it would cost them financially if he didn’t win.
Tom likes to think he would have still won if he was up against Ian cuz Katie beat him up pretty good the last few weeks. He said Ian was like his Assistant Coach & then it unraveled for him in the last weeks.
The hardest part of the game was being away from his wife & kids. He got used to being w/out food but missing his family just got more intense.
Harry asked Ian why he flipped on Tom. Ian said he knew if he got to Final 2 w/ one of the girls he could beat them but he would have trouble w/ Tom. He then corrected himself & said he THOUGHT he would beat the girls. Harry asked him to explain his relationship w/ Katie & why he would sacrifice himself for her. Ian said they are great friends w/ the same type of personality but it is just platonic.
Jenn said she saw her opportunity so she took it to flip Ian. She couldn’t get Katie to flip though. Harry asked why didn’t the do an female alliance. Katie said cuz Stephenie was there & they didn’t want her to go any farther. Jenn said Steph was America’s Sweetheart & like Katie said, Caryn sucks. She thought if they had Ian he could beat Tom & they could take him out. Jenn said they probably should have done the girl alliance but then maybe Steph could have gone all the way & they didn’t want that. Katie said they would rather Tom or Ian win over Steph.
Katie was surprised at how much she wasn’t liked & that they were so cruel & attacked her personality. She expected it from Caryn & Janu. She said it was very hard for her to communicate w/ Janu & knew she couldn’t convince her so there was no need to answer her question.
Katie was sure she would get #3 when she jumped off that pole & was fine w/ it. She didn’t believe Ian was giving it to her until Jeff asked Ian again if he was sure cuz everyone had been so shady & it wasn’t just her. Tom thought Ian had temporarily lost his mind cuz that challenge was pretty excruciating & his mind wandered while up there too. He thought maybe Ian wasn’t sure so he asked him again before he voted if he was sure & so did Jeff.
Harry asked if they ever found out what the final vote tally was. Tom said he was lost in the moment & was looking to his wife to see if she was frowning or smiling. Julie said Katie knows she at least got one vote – Coby’s.
Tom said again how his wife had told him to forget everything he planned for strategy & just be himself & play it straight.
Julie asked Katie what was the hardest thing for her out there? Katie joked the rope swing. She said missing her family was for all of them & that is why they bonded cuz they were their family away from home.
Harry pointed out that Ian works w/ Kids. Ian said he works w/ a charity at Penn State & brought as his guests kids that are in remission from Pediatric cancer & the camera cut to the kids so they got to be on TV.
Tom was given his check for a million dollars & it was a real check. Julie was really nervous about the check & kept telling him to sign it & write for deposit only or something on it. The weather guy jokingly handed Tom all his change & then Tom gave the change to Ian. Harry reminded him not to be Hatch & that he is responsible for paying the taxes.
Tom joked that he couldn’t afford to pay for his own mid-life crisis. His 3 kids college fund is now covered & he was asked if he was going to splurge on anything. Tom laughed & said last night they dove into the mini-bar & let the kids have another pack of M&Ms so they know something is changing in their lives.
