Some old, some brand new, and some major surprises! Really, it’s surprising that no one sang 50 cent. Wouldn’t it have been priceless if Carrie took us to the Candy Shop, or Bo crooned about all the mamas sh-shshsh-shakin’ that a** girl. By Jlynn206

A FLAT, A SHARP, AND SOME GROWLS
A VOCAL ASSESMENT: TOP FIVE
Man are we getting to hear some modern music this season. Tonight we saw a mixture of oldies by what’s his name and whose his face. They wrote lots of songs we know, and lots of ones Elvis sang. They also sang songs from this weeks Top Billboard charts. Feasibly, they could have sang Kelly and Fantasia. I believe they would have had 3 Kelly choices! Way to go Kelly! Really, it’s surprising that no one sang 50 cent. Wouldn’t it have been priceless if Carrie took us to the Candy Shop, or Bo crooned about all the mamas sh-shshsh-shakin’ that a** girl.
Surprising is a good word to describe tonight, as each performer brought something special to the table, yes even Scott! I said it! Scott had his best night to date, and it was the best night he could have had it. With millions of votes, it’s anybody’s guess who will actually pack their suitcases tomorrow night.
ANTHONY: “Poison Ivy” 6/10 & “Incomplete” 9/10
Pitch was not on this Ukrainian’s side during the first number. It was fun, in a Clay having to sing Grease is the word kind of way, but outclassed by the likes of Clay’s Sugar Pie Honey Bunch. I know I’m comparing him to Clay, and I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me. My apologies. Anyway, that said, it was fun, and he did have a nice little run at the end where he brought it up an octave.
As I hide my face in shame, I admit to being an avid BSB fan in middle school. I love their new song, and I really liked Anthony’s take. I agree with Simon that this was Anthony’s song, but also agree that it had some flatness going on, but never on the notes that ended a phrase. It wasn’t horrible by any means, and he nailed the run at the end. That said, I think overall Anthony was the weakest of the night. Paula’s right though, torch ballads are his game. I’m sure glad he didn’t pick Jesse McCartney’s “Beautiful Soul!”
SCOTT: “On Broadway” 8/10 & “Every time you go away” 9/10
WOW. I am so confused. This was the Scott we’ve been waiting for. Before tonight, Scott had been my Carmen. The bane of my season four existence. He was on tonight. And I hate this song, because my friend sings it all the time for auditions and it drives me mad. But go Scott, he growled and bluesed his way through a really nifty rendition. He had nice runs, made it his own, and sold it. It’s the first time he seemed completely confident. Good for him, not letting Simon tear him down.
WOW again. I didn’t know this was a Brian McNight song until they told us. I guess I’m not up on new Brian. I think this is Scott’s genre, and had he been singing this style from the start I could even be a bit of a fan. Not a buy his cd kinda fan, but not change the station when it comes on kind of fan. This was his best song ever to me, and I completely disagree with Simon, he was NOT FLAT. Scott’s really growing as a performer. I wish I had seen this side of him before my top 46 performers from all four seasons list. It would have been fun if he sang “Mr. Lonely!” Complete with background chipmunks.
VONZELL: “Treat me Nice.” 10/10 & “?” 9/10
I think audiences are going to treat her nice with some mad votes! She did with this song, what Carrie was attempting to do with hers. Vonzell flirted with us, took us in, and brought us home. Everything about this performance was dead on. You know what!? I THINK SIMON IS USING REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY! I think he’s trying to make sure people vote for her by angering them. He wants to make sure she stays, so he is causing controversy around her so we pick up our phones. And as soon as I’m done writing this I am going to go vote for the first time this season, and for Vonzell! She just rocked it! I loved it! She is a joy to watch and hear!!!
She looked STUNNING! Wow. I don’t know what this song is called, or who sings it, but she surely made me confident I made the right decision in placing her #1 on my list of looks. What a pretty dress. That said, I felt like there were a few flat moments in this piece that Randy apparently could not hear. However, she NAILED the money note, and had a pretty head voice ending that can be dangerous. I think tonight was Vonzell’s night! Thank God she didn’t try to get us to One to Step with her goodies!
BO: “Stand By Me” 9/10 & “Heaven” 8/10
Bo is comfy. You could listen to him while lying on the couch. He’s comfy in a way that he makes performing and singing look so effortless that it makes you wonder. He manages to pick songs that do not stretch him that vocally, but he makes them sound like he’s giving it all he’s got. He’s skating by in this comfyness. But I don’t think this comfyness is going to let him win over Carrie and Vonzell. I think he is going to do fine either way, but I got a strange feeling that he is like one of my little brother’s friends. My brother has had an array of bands, and he hangs with many a Bo. I dunno…. He gets points for singing such a comfy song that we can all sing along to.
I had no idea what Bo would sing, but I think this was the perfect choice for him. Though I think that new Jett song would have done him good too. His last run was a bit off, but he saved it. I think this was some of the strongest vocals we’ve heard from Bo, and I really enjoyed it. The songs had similar feels to me, and I don’t think Bo really stretched himself.
CARRIE: “Trouble” 9/10 & “Bless the Broken Road” 10/10
Blondie brought it home tonight, with fellow growler Scott. Carrie growled her way with no “trouble” through her first number. And I got the feeling that her and Vonzell were both going for a playful, sex kitten first number, and Bammin’ Ballad second number. Not surprising, but Vonzell won the game. I have to say that Carrie’s performance skills grew overnight. She connected to both songs far better than she ever has before, and almost actually sold an up-tempo number! Crazy! Perhaps I was too harsh on her! It was fun and it was cute. Good job Carrie! I’d say cut back on the growling, we get the point, and growling does not equal commitment, and it can hurt your voice when used to excess.
I thought she’d pick a country number, which would mean I don’t know it at all. Too bad she didn’t pick the new Gwen Stefani song! That would have been hilarious. Carrie in a cheerleading uniform singing “aint no holla’ back grrrl!” Ah….priceless I say. That said, this was a classy performance. She didn’t hit us over the head with her vocals, but let the song have a beginning, middle, and end. Every thing about it was gorgeous. Nice going Carrie, I liked the sitting. Kudos, it’s hard to sing when you are sitting.
Well there you have it. Look for my article on top vocals of all four seasons later this week. At this point, I am hoping for a Vonzell/Carrie final. I think Bo will round out the top 3, and Anthony will leave us tonight. I was pleasantly surprised by Scott tonight. Were you?
