Who do I think were the Top 2 performances tonight? By Jacalynn West

They had 2 themes this week for their 2 songs. Leiber & Stoller are old time rock ‘n roll writers & the other one was any song from this week’s Billboard 100 Chart.
Anthony was first & his Leiber & Stoller song was ‘Poison Ivy’. I love that song. Anthony just didn’t have the right voice for it. I didn’t like it at all. But he had some moments that were better than others & he seemed to enjoy performing. Randy said it was very out of tune in the beginning & he kind of got it together at the end but it wasn’t for him. Anthony retorted that he was trying to have fun w/ this one. Paula gave him credit for picking a song w/ versatility but she is a bigger fan when he sings ballads. Simon said so she didn’t like it. He said Anthony is lucky they are doing 2 songs cuz that was an insipid, amateurish performance that did him no favors. He better do better on his 2nd song.
Scott Savol sang ‘On Broadway’. I thought he sounded good. He taunted Simon & sang directly to him. Some of his notes were clunkers but I thought it was better than he has been in awhile. Randy said there were some bad notes & pitch problems but every week he comes up w/ just enough to pull it off. Paula said he has a lot of moxie & conviction. She has only heard George Benson’s version of this song but now loves Scott’s. Simon said he has had more escapes than Houdini. He agreed w/ Randy & said this was probably Scott’s best performance.
Vonzell Solomon sang ‘Treat Me Nice’. I didn’t like it at all. It just didn’t sound right to me. Not the right tone or something. I am far from a singing expert so I can’t put my finger on it. But the end was really good. I still like this girl & think she should be the next AI. Randy tooted his own horn reminding us he is a record producer & then said that was the best vocal he has heard. He barely knows that song & she made him like it. He said it was an incredible performance. Paula rambled incoherently for awhile & then said something about her on Broadway. She said Vonzell is the consummate performer w/ great vocals. Simon said elements of it were very good but overall it was a mess. He thought it was childish & cutesy.
Bo Bice sang ‘Stand By Me’. I really, really love this song. & I love this movie too. I thought Bo did a very pretty rendition. The background singers were too loud & sounded cheesy. But other than that, the best performance so far. Randy said he loves that every week Bo picks the right song for him. He knows exactly what record he should make & think he is definitely on his way. Paula said it is always great when you pick a song that young & old alike can sing along too. She thinks there is no reason to critique him & just enjoy him. Simon said they said it all. He chose the best song by a mile.
Carrie Underwood sang ‘Trouble’. If you read my articles every week, you know I am not a Carrie fan. But I am not like other reviewers that say the same nicey nice things each week about the performers. But I can also admit when someone I don’t like does well & I thought Carrie did great on this song. Might have even topped Bo. It is close. Randy said he said the same for Bo. She picked the right song for her & knows exactly who she is & what she should record. He thought it was a great song choice. Paula said it was so much fun to see a different side of her & it is her favorite performance of Carrie’s. She ended saying she is a star. Simon said he agrees w/ Randy. You have to give your fans what they want & that was it.
Now it was on to any song from this week’s Billboard 100. They go in the same order so Anthony is first & sang ‘Incomplete’. It was ok. Randy said it was ok but doesn’t compare to The Backstreet Boys song. Paula said it is tough to do a group song as a solo but thought overall it was a good job. Simon said he had a disastrous start but chose the right song & did well.
Scott sang ‘Everytime You Go Away’. I didn’t like it. I think he sounded ok on it. I just didn’t like the song. Or maybe it was his voice. I don’t know. I just didn’t like it. Do you think I liked it? Randy said he did it again. He pulled it out. Paula said he owned it on stage & it was his best night. Scott said he had to do his thing for Simon cuz he’s not going home. Simon said he was more flat than in tune on that song & was much better on the first one. When Scott was talking to Ryan after the critiques he said he has to start thinking about what song he will do next week. That caught Ryan off-guard & he laughed.
Vonzell sang ‘When You Tell Me That You Love Me’. Good job. Randy & Paula gave standing O’s. Randy said that was a perfect vocal & thought it was unbelievable. Paula said they hear it when all the idols sing it & it was beautiful hearing one voice. Simon said it wasn’t the perfect vocal & thinks she is very vulnerable & her voters need to vote often.
Bo sang ‘Heaven’. Very good. Puts him in my #1 for the night before seeing Carrie. Randy said Bo is the Captain of the “Dog Pound” tonight. Paula said he looked & picked fantastic. She said he rules. Simon said he had a good night cuz he acts & performs like the real thing & makes some of the others look like amateurs.
Carrie closed the night with ‘Bless The Broken Road’. It wasn’t bad. It doesn’t top Bo though. Randy said another great perfect vocal & he would have bought it. Paula thought it was a safe choice of a simple song but she sang it eloquent & perfect. Simon said it was very good though the performance was robotic.
My picks? I liked Bo as #1 with Carrie as #2. It is between Scott & Anthony to go & I don’t care which.
