First, let's talk about why American Idol chooses the contestents they do: Because of body image and sex appeal. When they depart from this, they go to extreme opposites--the fat person, the ugly face, the jagged teeth, the jutting jaw. By Bettye Pierce Zoller

This supposedly "proves" that the Idol folks are "equal opportunity" auditioners. If everybody on the show was gorgeous, people would notice that. See? So they try to "balance" beauty with the beast.
Second, let's consider the singers' voices and approaches: In the interest of appealing to all viewers to get the biggest ratings (ratings are everything in TV land, remember?) the Idol folks try to choose some singers who are "sweet," some who are "sex kittens," some who are "studs," and some who are "mommy's sweet boy." We then are supposed to watch the show and believe we have a "cross section of America." Bull.
Third, if you think singers are chosen for their vocal ability, think again, you foolish soul. Every step of the way, a contestant is chosen for his or her 'image' and for the potential to 'attract viewers.' Some marvelous SINGERs (this is supposed to be about singing, remember???) never make it even to the finals because they do not appeal to the powers that be--for their ability to attract millions of viewers.
Fourth: Look at the costuming of contestants who make it on to the actual TV show. Have you noticed that all the women look like sluts? Sorry, but the dress is vulgar. Even with an overweight contestant, the "Idol folks" put her in tight jeans far too tight for a fat gal, breasts hanging out, worse. The contestant could be dressed in a much more flattering manner to minimize weight, to hide a bulging stomach or huge thighs, but Idol folks do not care. One would hope that the contestant (or perhaps an interested coach or a parent) would protest the clothing styles when they are not at all flattering. Where are these people when they should be helping their children or pupils?
Fifth: Where did they get this female vocal coach shown so often in video clips directing the singers? She needs to work much harder with some of the contestants to bridge their vocal breaks, to make the most of their strengths and minimize weaknesses, and most of all, as a longtime voice coach, many of the KEYS the songs are set in (musical arrangements) do NOT show the contestants' best ranges but, in fact, highlight vocal weak spots. Where did this woman get this job and why can't WE audition to be the coach? Let the coaches of America vie for her position! She's making huge bucks. How can we ask the Idol folks to let other coaches audition for her position? And lest you think I'm just talking about myself, let me say that there are fantastic singing coaches all over America. How about a coach registry and a coach audition process? Why are we, the makers of singers you enjoy in every entertainment venue, being left out of the IDOL machine??
By the way, my singers have achieved greatness on Broadway, have won major talent searches, and have gone on to become major stars. I am a former RCA recording artist and veteran performer.
