2nd Person Booted from Survivor 7: Pearl Islands By Jacalynn West

MF: Why do you think Andrew targeted you?
RYAN: I think Andrew (and everyone else) sized up the competition on the boat ride before the game started. I think he had a good idea of who he wanted on his tribe and who he thought would be the smartest, strongest, and hardest workers. I think he also knew who he did NOT want on his tribe. I honestly think, he never wanted me on his tribe and was disappointed when it turned out that I was. I am pretty certain he viewed me as unathletic, and a complete liability. I didn't fit his mold of what he thought a Survivor should look and act like. This could totally be incorrect, but that's my best guess.
MF: Did you guys hide anything so Sandra couldn’t take it?
RYAN: We were not allowed to hide anything. Although piracy *is* the theme it wouldn't be sportsman like to hide stuff. It's one thing to backstab, deceive, and lie to people within the context of the game, but it's another to completely disobey rules and to be unsportsman like. We did try to mask certain items we wanted to keep and try to make other things appealing. For instance, our lantern didn't work well, so we made sure to have it out in the open so it could be seen well.
MF: Did you guys hold a grudge against her for taking your tarp?
RYAN: I, personally, didn't hold a grudge against Sandra for that. I do, however, feel she was inconsiderate when she was deciding what to take. She didn't handle herself very well, at least in my opinion.
MF: What did you guys need the most that you would have taken from Drake?
RYAN: That's a good question. While I was out there, I never really considered what I would really like from the other tribe. I just wanted a win. I suppose the water jug they had would be nice, but I probably would have felt better taking *their* shelter - however, I wouldn't have wanted to be the one to take it - I would have sent Andrew. ;) The smartest thing to take from them would be their fishing spear, but I seriously doubt I would have thought of that at the time.
MF: If Osten hadn’t told you he wanted to go home, who would you have voted for?
RYAN: I hadn't fully decided what angle to take at the second tribal council. I felt Tijuana had the least to offer as she seemed highly uncoordinated and a very poor swimmer (I swam next to her on the way to town the first day). However, I had heard that Andrew wasn't especially happy with Darrah. Thinking that Ryan O. would never let Darrah be voted off, I was leaning toward Tijuana. However, before I started lobbying, Osten began his attempts to be voted off. I honestly should have recognized earlier that the tribe wouldn't vote off Osten and went ahead with a different plan. However, I just felt Osten should be the one to go if he's wanting to go less than a week in to the game.
MF: Drake seems to have plenty to eat, were you guys eating well?
RYAN: As far as my nutritional in take, I felt great. I usually don't eat well at home, so a diet of rice and beans, coconut and water was a nutritional upgrade! ;) I was never hungry the six days I was there and I felt that I could coast on that diet. I went in mentally prepared to starve and the fact that I wasn't hungry was an extreme mental boost. I did get dehydrated one night, though. After a challenge we didn't have any water boiled and I had to suffer through the night until we could get some more and boil it.
MF: Do you think you would have gotten farther on the Drake Tribe?
RYAN: I absolutely think I would have done better on the Drake Tribe. They seem to be a very upbeat and friendly tribe (that happens with comradery). This would have been the ideal situation for my personality type. I would have felt more comfortable talking to them and thus better at working my way in to social circles. I never got the feeling that anyone in Morgan, except Lillian, was really listening to what I said, or even cared. The personality types on the Drake Tribe seem to be more compatible with my own. It would have been a real boost. However, I couldn't say with absolute certainty I would have gotten further, it's just speculation based on what I know and have seen.
MF: Did you like the new twists they threw at you guys?
RYAN: I love the twists! Keeping Survivor fresh is what makes it such a fun and challenging game! The initial twist actually kind of hurt me as I had picked out certain clothes that masked just how thin I am so that it wouldn't be an issue. But, regardless, the twist was brilliant and a perfect idea for the theme and season. The penalty for losing reward is brilliant also. It ups the ante and makes challenges more tense and allows for tribal interaction before the merge.
MF: Did you know Rupert was stealing your stuff in the village?
RYAN: I don't think anyone at Morgan knew Rupert stole our stuff. We were completely chaotic and in disarray in the town. I am sure the last thing anyone noticed were some missing dress shoes. They probably would have just thought Osten sold them since he was selling off garments.
MF: Any advice for future Survivors?
RYAN: Always, always be thinking. I let my guard down on too many occasions when I should have been thinking constantly; especially since I knew I was in such trouble. I let myself get too involved in "what needs to be done" for the day and always staying busy finding work to be done. I should have spent most of this time coming up with concrete and vivid strategies to be able to adapt at any time. I should have been better prepared with a concrete strategy when I realized they wouldn't vote off Osten. It's never too late to get yourself out of a jam, but you have to be ready for it.
MF: Anything else you would like to add?
RYAN: Survivor is simply a brilliant game. But, a lot of it is luck and circumstantial. You cannot pick who you get on your tribe or what the challenges will be. However, you *do* have to create your own luck and take advantage of all your opportunities. I certainly failed in that area. I know it sounds like I complain about the situation I was thrown in to, but it's really hard not to when for six days you're a part of tribe that doesn't seem to want you there and you lose in absolutely every challenge you compete. I was so lucky to get the opportunity to be a part of this and it was the most amazing thing I have ever done. I'll never lose sight of that. Thank you for your questions and I appreciate it! :)
