...is the truth
Since the first airing of Cupid, I knew that I could always count on a few things happening - 1) Cupid has that creepy American Idol feel to its format; 2) Lisa has the whitest teeth on CBS; 3) whenever McFaydencrest is promoting something on Cupid, he will always yell at the top of his lungs, 4) the show’s producers will always show the guys walking into the house they live in with their luggage; and lastly, Lil Swartzenegger will not get voted off. But this week, Cupid had a few surprises in store. For starters, McFaydencrest got a haircut. What gives? I thought he was going for that whole Buckwheat thing. He comes out after a BB4 style recap and introduces the guys. I know this because as I was writing my notes and not looking at the TV, McFaydencrest started yelling the introductions. Either McFaydencrest thinks he is still on MTV, or he is really happy to SEE the guys, if you know what I mean. McFaydencrest stills keeps the yelling going and introduces our lovely Lisa. Another surprise. Lisa is wearing a long skirt. Too bad it has slits up to her crotch. She just won’t let that fact go. Next are the introductions of Labitch and BK. Surprised again. Am I the only one who has just come to the realization that Labitch looks like a white Tina Turner?
Anyway, on to more important things, the togas. After we see the guys moving into the house they have been living in for the last few weeks, the monkeys decide to throw a toga party. The party consists of five guys drinking alcohol in nothing but togas. Hmmm. Why do I hear cheesy 70’s porn music in my head? Where’s Jon Holmes? Oh wait; Lil S is at the party, so that takes care of the creep factor. The Greek monkeys make a toast to Joe, Joe’s hair and the fact that Evan can handle a lifetime with Joe. Then we get to see Evan hating Hunk. We see Evan getting pissed off at Hunk. We see Fratboy calling Lil S delusional. (DUH!!!!) We see Lil S surprisingly comfortable in his toga. We see Renda contemplating his departure. And what have I learned from all these observations? Two things actually, 1) Evan is gay and 2) a toga party with just men is not as hot as I imagined it would be.
I have to admit that the Cupid producers knew what they were doing when they orchestrate the whole toga party montage. After minutes of contemplation and a few minutes more of writing the last paragraph, it just dawned on me that the toga montage was just filler to waste 5 more minutes of the show. I’m outraged! You mean to tell me that Cupid is not a reality show that will last through November sweeps? Will we have a Cupid2 ala For Love or Money2? Have you noticed that I’m going off on a tangent because I can’t think of a transitional sentence to say who got voted off? Well, folks, it was Renda.
As if it matters, McFaydencrest goes through the guys like American Idol contestants telling Evan, Hunk and Lil S that they are safe. Renda and Fratboy are the lowest votes. McFaydencrest does his mentor’s long pause trick and we cut to commercial and after that Renda is lead away to face even more rejection online as he is put on the block at Match.com. I hope I win a date with him so I can become a circus freak.
Now that the dirty work is out of the way, we come to the dates. McFaydencrest lets us know that since this will be their last dates (HUH?!?! Last dates?!! I know I was drinking a little wine during last week’s show but no mentioned these were the last dates. There are four guys left?) They have no rules or tricks and the dates are up to the guys. (producers). Evan is up first.
Evan decides to take Lisa on a real nice, expensive and romantic date since their last dates weren’t really up to snuff. (Maybe it’s the fact that you are gay, Evan.) Lisa wants to know where “all of this is going.” “There are walls around you, Evan.” “I want to know where you stand.” (Hey Lisa, I take a bet that Evan would probably like to be standing behind a guy right now.) Evan gives her the whole sensitive guy, you can break down my walls, I promise you I’m not a player routine and they go for a swim at the beach. A PG-13 camera shot of Lisa in her bikini and next Evan suggests they take a shower with their bathing suits on of course. (Yep, he’s gay.) Then they go whale watching. Lisa enjoys these moments by vomiting for 5 hours. Looks like Evan blew it again. (On purpose, perhaps?!?!?!!)
Labitch and BK ring in with their comments. Labitch agrees that they have chemistry and even admits to having chemistry with him (fag hag). But she wants to know how is he going to make his money as a volleyball coach. A girl’s volleyball coach. (Hello?! Gay!) BK is the only one with her gaydar working because she admits to not trusting him.
Lil S is next. He has to make this date count for all it’s worth because this is the last time Lil S has to confess once again his love for Lisa. Depending on how the date goes, he even might propose to Lisa at the end of the date. (My “good television” sense is tingling. I have to keep my eyes directly on the tube and my wine glass down.) Lil S spares no expense for his ladylove by taking her to an all expense paid trip to “work out.” Lil S apparently wants to “PUMP (clap) HER UP!” (Yes, a classic SNL reference)
After the workout, Lil S and Lisa take a break from each other and reflect on how the date is going so far. Lil S is reading. A shocker! And Lisa is crying under the covers fending sleep. Then they head to dinner. A time to open up and share life stories. A time to enjoy each other’s company. Lil S and Lisa only found time to find out that Lisa was a tomboy growing up and Lil S was too. The waitress comes by and asks if they have made a decision on dessert. Lil S asks if they could take it with them. Lisa has the fear of God’s wrath on her face. My sense is really tingling now. After a brief walk to somewhere with the dessert, Lisa finally grows a backbone and bails. SHE BAILS! She tells Lil S that she’s tired and wants to go to sleep. Lil S says okay, I guess. “I still love Lisa!” Surprisingly, I thought I would be a little choked up seeing Lil S’s ultimate humiliation but I can’t shed tears on good quality television. Besides, Labitch gives him a hug afterwards that makes up for my coldness. And gimme me a break, I’m going to vote for him.
Fratboy decides to take Lisa up to Big Bear in California. It’s woodsy, mountainous, and Fratboy wants to have a great time with Lisa there. And to have a great time with Lisa is to talk her ear off about having a great time. Then after that, a massage. (Hey, is that some huge-ass pimples on Lisa’s back?) Fratboy knows where he stands with Lisa. He doesn’t have a prayer in the world to marry Lisa. So being the good sport that fratboys usually are, Fratboy yaps on and on talking smack about the other monkeys. “Hunk throws footballs at me!” whines Fratboy. Fratboy says, “Don’t sell yourself short, Lisa.” (Uh, I think she already did when she agree to appear on this show.) Topping off the “great time” date, Fratboy hands Lis a candy necklace and eats it off her. (Domenic’s head – “Well, if I can’t marry her, I might as well do her.”)
Last and definitely on purpose is Hunk’s date. They go to a vineyard because Hunk wants a vineyard and when Hunk wants, Hunk gets. “It’s do or die time,” Hunk reads off a cue card. He’s conflicted. He’s torn. He’s so hunk. Hunk asks Lisa if it were Hunk and Evan on the stage, WHOM would she pick? Awkward moment of silence as Lisa doesn’t respond because she is too busy wiping the drool off her chin. They go to dinner and there’s more apprehension, more drool and more wine in my glass because I can’t take much more of this.
And as if to prolong my endless rantings of “why am I watching this?” Lisa decides to profess her love for Hunk LIVE right there on the stage in front of all the other guys. I wonder if Lil S is still thinking he has a chance with her. McFaydencrest doesn’t know what to do except break them up before they start doing it and cut to commercial.
We come back to more filler of Lisa reflecting on the four guys and each journey she has taken with them. Because you know it ain’t a reality show unless there has been a journey involved. We break for another round of commercials and come back to hear a 30-second plea from each of the guys. At this point, there is none since Lisa was about to hump Hunk on the white stage rug. Aha! I knew there was a reason for the slits in the skirt. Very clever Lisa, very clever. Another round of commercials….
Finally, we get to the phone numbers to vote. This is it guys. Since this is the last week to vote for whom we think is right for Lisa or right for our own personal amusement, we got to vote. It’s our last chance to take part in a live broadcast where we get to decide who wins. Well, at least until American Idol3 airs.
Until next week……
