Amazing Race: Amazing Race: Finale: August 21

    AmazingRace
Geesh, what an adrenaline rush. I don’t know about y’all, but I get totally into the race when I watch. I yell, I tap my foot, I bite my nails, the heart races. You’d think I had some stake in the outcome. It’s worse than me during the TX v. Texas A&M game. Husband can’t even be in the same room with me when that sucker’s on.

    Start

So we have David and Jeff (yep, my original pick for winning), Chip and Reichen (married, gay), and Kelly and Jon (engaged.) They are all at Ellis Beach in Australia. David and Jeff are first to get the clue, since they arrived first, which tells them to drive to an Aboriginal Cultural Park to participate in some ceremony and receive the next clue.

Chip and Reichen say that they want people to see them as prepared and out to win. They left off “hot.”

David and Jeff arrive at the park and read the sign. Doesn’t open until 6:00 a.m.

Kelly tells the camera that she doesn’t think that she and Jon should even be in the race, since, as she put it, they were so “stupid.”

Chip and Reichen and Kelly and Jon arrive and wait with David and Jeff for the park to open.

5:59 a.m. Park opens, teams race in in order to get through the ceremony. It involves fire and burning down some other island. Anyway, they get these message sticks that have the clues in them. Clue tells each team to go to the Cairns Airport to the General Aviation Terminal.

David and Jeff leave first, then Jon and Kelly, then Chip and Reichen. Chip tries to pass Jon and Kelly but totally bites it on the side of the road. They re-right the car and get right back behind Kelly and Jon. Kelly laughs at their persistence.

    They arrive at the terminal.

    Detour

Choice is: Wing It or Wander It. I don’t remember what Wander It was all about; none of the teams chose it. In Wing It, they all have to skydive in tandem with a professional skydiving instructor. When they land, they will find the clue around their landing site.

David and Jeff get in the air first and start their skydiving. Love it.

Kelly and Jon are up next and Kelly is freaking out (flashback to the rappelling down that hotel earlier) and Jon calms her - - a bit. She ends up loving it.

Chip and Reichen are third to do the dive. Love it. Reichen says he’d rather be doing that than be in the backseat with Chip driving.

    Commercial.

David and Jeff reach the clue first and it tells them to fly to Hawaii, 4700 miles away. There they will go to some bay that’s at the southernmost tip of the U.S.

David and Jeff decide to fly out of Cairns to Sydney, where they will try to find a flight to Honolulu. Chip and Reichen and Kelly and Jon decide to catch a Qantas flight (thanks from the reader last week, btw) that will take them to Tokyo and then connect to Honolulu. They will have 45minutes to make the connection.

David and Jeff arrive in Sydney and find out that they are screwed. The next flight to Honolulu isn’t until the next day, and the way it sounds, Kelly and Jon and Reichen and Chip will be there way before that. A bell somewhere tolls.

Once in Tokyo, Chip and Reichen race to the right gate to catch the flight to Hawaii. They bought coach tickets, but the airlines gave them business class so they got to sip champagne the whole way there.

Kelly and Jon had trouble finding the gate and arrived a bit behind, and though they begged, and some nice little Japanese woman argued for them, it was a no go because they arrived at the gate too soon to boarding time. Ah, a nice little lesson for all us procrastinators from the airline industry. Kelly cried on Jon’s shoulder. He stayed positive that they would get ahead some other way.

    Commercial.

Jon curses Chip and Reichen with Hawaii’s version of Montezuma’s revenge. Ugh. He and Kelly find out that the next flight to Hawaii will have them arriving one hour and ten minutes behind Chip and Reichen.

    Hawaii

Once in the States, Chip and Reichen race to a parked car outside the airport. They head off to the Kaulana Bay, and wonder aloud where David and Jeff are. Forget about those two. They are toast.

David and Jeff are only now leaving for Hawaii from Sydney. Hope they found some nice girls to make that time there worthwhile.

Chip and Reichen get stuck in some traffic on the way to the Bay. Kelly and Jon arrive about now and get into their car.

    Roadblock

Once at the Bay, they find that the Roadblock involves one team member swimming out to some Tiki heads and diving underneath them to grab a rock. Then that person swims back to shore with the rock and breaks it open to find the clue inside. Chip does it for their team. The clue tells them to go to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and to walk across some dried lava to find the next Route Marker.

Kelly and Jon arrive and Jon does the swim naked. He comes back to shore and breaks the rock open naked, too. We were spared the details by the nice little fuzz that the network does. They leave for the Volcano Park.

Chip and Reichen arrive at the Volcano Park. Route Marker tells them to go 2900 miles to Phoenix, AZ where they will find the anchor of the USS Arizona. They decide to fly out of Hilo to get there.

Kelly wants to go out of the Kona airport because even though it’s further away, it has more flight options. So she and Jon and Chip and Reichen are headed in different directions.

They each arrive at their respective airports and find flights that will take them through Honolulu first. Once in Honolulu, both Chip and Reichen and Jon and Kelly are on the same flight into Arizona. They try to find people who know Phoenix well to tell them where that darn anchor is.

    Commercial.

On the flight, Jon looks serious. He says he’s praying, and I believe him. Chip and Reichen are first off the flight and sprint to a taxi, with Kells and Jon not far behind. Chip grabs the taxi he sees and offers him $50 to go faster. Jon offers his driver $100 to do the same. Guess saving your pennies does come in handy in this game, as both the drivers are open to a bit of bribery to skirt the laws of speed.

Once at the anchor, they find out that they need to go to Sun Devils Stadium. Chip and Reichen arrive first and get a clue that tells them: Valentines Day and White plus White. Phil voice-overs and tells us that they must solve this clue. Basically, they have to put together that Valentine’s Day means section 214 and White plus White refers to the adding up of two former players’ numbers (don’t ask me who – I don’t follow anything but TX football.) That number tells them what seat to find the clue on.

Chip and Reichen figure it out, but only Chip goes up to get it so that Reichen can fake out Kelly and Jon about where it is if they arrive there. Luckily for them, Kelly and Jon arrive as they are leaving for the final destination, some park where they will mountain bike to the Pit Stop.

    The End

Kelly and Jon figure out the clue and then head to the park, but Chip and Reichen are just far enough ahead to take first place. All the teams from the past in this show up to cheer them on to the finish. Chip cries; Reichen hugs him and it’s all very sweet.

Kelly and Jon arrive second and Kelly cries. Jon comforts her and seems proud that she was the only girl to have made it this far. I guess he’s not counting Reichen.

Meanwhile, slowpokes David and Jeff are just now arriving back at the Volcano Park in Hawaii and read that Chip and Reichen came in first and Kelly and Jon came in second. They look disappointed, but not surprised.

I was sad that they don’t do the thing after the show like they do on Survivor, where they bring them all together for a debrief-type thing. It was weird; one minute I’m cheering for the, happy, etc.; next minute; they’re gone. Just weird. Probably my unnatural affection for people I don’t even know who are on TV is somewhat to blame.

AND, in case you didn’t believe that Tian and Jaree were models, check out the new issue of O magazine. There I was the other night, bleary-eyed from working in my classroom all day trying to get it ready for 20 new seven-year-olds next week, and I look at the Bacardi ad next to the thick bookmarks that Oprah always puts in (does anyone use those?) and there is Tian, the girl all the way on the right, enjoying, presumably, some Bacardi drink mixer with a couple of close girlfriends. Looks just like her. I am also wondering if Jaree was like, maybe, a hand model?

    TTFN.
